How to Flush Your Coolant System Yourself

Coolant doesn't last forever. Over time, the corrosion inhibitors in antifreeze break down, the pH drops, and that bright green or orange liquid turns into an acidic mix that slowly eats your water pump, radiator, and heater core from the inside. Most manufacturers recommend flushing the coolant every 30,000–50,000 miles or every 2–5 years depending on the coolant type — and most people never do it. If you've owned your car for a few years and have no idea when the coolant was last changed, now is the time.

A coolant flush is one of the more satisfying DIY jobs: simple, inexpensive, and genuinely preventive.

What You Need

  • Coolant flush chemical (optional but recommended for contaminated systems)
  • New coolant — check whether your car uses green (IAT), orange (OAT), or pink/blue (HOAT/G-12). Using the wrong type causes gelling and accelerates corrosion.
  • Distilled water
  • Large drain pan (at least 2-gallon capacity)
  • Funnel
  • Basic hand tools (usually just pliers for the drain petcock)
  • Safety glasses and gloves — antifreeze is toxic to animals and children

Step 1: Let the Engine Cool Completely

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. The cooling system is pressurized, and hot coolant will spray and cause serious burns. Wait at least 30–60 minutes after driving, or work on a cold engine first thing in the morning.


Step 2: Locate the Drain Point

Look underneath the radiator for a drain petcock — a small plastic valve you can open to drain coolant without removing a hose. Not all vehicles have one; if yours doesn't, you'll drain by loosening the lower radiator hose clamp and pulling the hose from the radiator inlet.

Place your drain pan under the drain point.


Step 3: Open the Radiator Cap and Drain

Remove the radiator cap (or coolant reservoir cap, on pressurized overflow systems) to allow air in and let the coolant drain freely. Open the drain petcock or disconnect the lower hose.

Let the coolant drain completely — this typically takes 5–10 minutes. The old coolant goes into the drain pan for proper disposal (auto parts stores accept used coolant; never pour it down the drain or onto the ground).


Step 4: Flush the System

Close the drain, and fill the system with plain distilled water. Start the engine and let it warm to operating temperature (the thermostat needs to open to circulate water through the whole system). Run it for 10 minutes, then shut off and let it cool again.

Drain the water. Repeat this flush 1–2 times until the drained water runs clear.

If the system is heavily contaminated — sludge, rust, or discolored coolant — use a flush chemical. Add it to the system with distilled water, run the engine per the product instructions, then drain and flush with plain water to remove all traces before adding new coolant.


Step 5: Refill With Fresh Coolant

Mix coolant at a 50/50 ratio with distilled water unless you've purchased pre-diluted coolant (sold as "50/50 mix"). Use distilled water — tap water introduces minerals that cause scale deposits.

Fill slowly through the radiator cap opening (or coolant reservoir, depending on your car). Leave some room — the system will burp out air pockets as it warms up.

Important: Match the coolant specification to your vehicle. Using green IAT coolant in a car that calls for OAT will cause compatibility issues and corrosion over time. Check your owner's manual or the reservoir cap — most modern vehicles specify a color or type.


Step 6: Bleed the Air

Air trapped in the cooling system causes hot spots and overheating. With the cap removed, start the engine and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature. As the thermostat opens and coolant circulates, air bubbles will escape from the fill neck. Keep topping up as the level drops.

Some vehicles have a bleeder valve (usually a small bolt near the thermostat housing or on a high point of the upper radiator hose connection) that you can open to let trapped air escape. Check your service manual if your car tends to trap air.

Replace the cap once no more bubbles are escaping and the level is at the max mark.


What Good Coolant Looks Like

Fresh coolant is bright and translucent — green, orange, pink, or blue depending on type. Old coolant that needs changing looks murky, brownish, or rust-colored. If yours looks like coffee with cream, there may be oil or combustion gas contamination (a sign of a failing head gasket) — address that before refilling.
