How to Flush Your Radiator: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
A radiator flush (also called a coolant flush) is one of those maintenance jobs that most people put off indefinitely because it sounds more complicated than it is. It takes about 45 minutes, costs $20–$30 in materials, and extends the life of your water pump, thermostat, and heater core. Here's how to do it yourself.

Coolant (antifreeze) doesn't last forever. Over time, the corrosion inhibitors in the coolant break down, and the fluid becomes acidic. Acidic coolant:
- Corrodes the inside of your radiator and heater core
- Attacks water pump seals and bearings
- Deposits scale and sediment that clogs the cooling system
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a coolant flush every 30,000–50,000 miles or every 3–5 years.
Signs you're overdue:
- Brown or rusty-looking coolant
- Coolant with a sweet burning smell at operating temperature
- White residue or deposits around hose connections
- Overheating issues
What You'll Need
- New coolant (check your owner's manual for the correct type — Dex-Cool, green/conventional, OAT, HOAT — these are NOT interchangeable)
- Distilled water (not tap water — minerals in tap water accelerate scale buildup)
- Radiator flush chemical (optional but helpful for very dirty systems)
- Drain pan — at least 2-gallon capacity
- Pliers (for hose clamps, if needed)
- Funnel
- Gloves and eye protection
Coolant is toxic to pets — keep them away from your workspace and dispose of properly.
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool Completely
Never open the radiator cap or any cooling system component when the engine is hot. The cooling system is pressurized — hot coolant can spray and cause serious burns. Let the engine sit for at least 2 hours after driving, or work on a cold engine.
Step 2: Locate and Open the Radiator Drain
Most radiators have a petcock drain valve at the bottom corner — it looks like a plastic thumbscrew or a small hex bolt. Place your drain pan underneath it and open the petcock counterclockwise. Let all the old coolant drain out.
On vehicles without a petcock, you'll need to remove the lower radiator hose. Use pliers to slide the hose clamp back, then pull the hose off.
Step 3: Flush With Water
Once the old coolant is drained, close the petcock (or reinstall the hose). Pour distilled water into the radiator or overflow reservoir until the system is full. Start the engine and run it for 5–10 minutes with the heater set to maximum heat — this circulates the water through the heater core as well.
Let the engine cool, then drain again. This rinses out the residual old coolant.
Step 4: Mix and Add New Coolant
Most coolants come as full-strength concentrate that you dilute 50/50 with distilled water. A 50/50 mix provides freeze protection to approximately -34°F and boil-over protection to approximately +265°F.
Close the drain, then pour the mixed coolant into the radiator overflow reservoir until full.
Step 5: Burp the System
Air pockets in the cooling system cause hot spots and imprecise temperature gauge readings. After filling:
- Leave the radiator cap off (or overflow cap off).
- Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.
- You'll see air bubbles rising from the coolant.
- As the engine warms, the thermostat opens — this circulates coolant through the full system and releases trapped air.
- Top off the coolant level as air escapes and the level drops.
- Once the temperature stabilizes and you see no more bubbles, replace the cap.
Step 6: Dispose of Old Coolant
Coolant cannot go down a drain or in the trash. It's toxic to wildlife and pets. Drop it off at:
- AutoZone, O'Reilly, or Advance Auto Parts (most accept used coolant)
- Your local hazardous waste collection facility
