How to Pass Your Smog Check — Prep Your Car the Right Way

Smog check season comes around every 1–2 years depending on your state, and for most cars on modern fuel injection it's a non-event. But if your car has any pending trouble codes, incomplete readiness monitors, or emissions-related faults, you're going to fail — and have to come back, pay again, and fix whatever's wrong first.

The good news: most smog failures are preventable with the right preparation. Here's how to go in ready.

What a Smog Test Actually Checks

Modern smog tests (OBD-II smog checks, used on 1996+ vehicles) work differently than the old tailpipe sniffer test. The tester plugs into your OBD-II port and reads your car's own computer:

  1. Check engine light status — any stored trouble codes automatically fail you
  2. Readiness monitors — your car's onboard diagnostic tests (for catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, EGR, evap system, etc.) must show "Ready" or "Complete." If monitors are "Not Ready" (Incomplete), you fail.
  3. Live data — some states check live sensor data at idle and under load

This means you can't easily fool a smog test anymore — the car has to actually be operating correctly.


Step 1: Check and Clear Any Check Engine Light Issues

If your check engine light is on, you will fail. Period.

If the code is something emissions-related (catalytic converter efficiency, oxygen sensor, EVAP system), fix it. Don't just clear the code and hope for the best — cleared codes mean incomplete monitors (see next step).


Step 2: Run a Drive Cycle to Complete Readiness Monitors

This is the most misunderstood part of smog prep. When you clear codes (or disconnect the battery), all readiness monitors reset to "Not Ready." Before a smog test, the car needs to complete its self-diagnostics — this happens during a specific driving pattern called a drive cycle.

Each manufacturer has a specific drive cycle. A generic one that works for most vehicles:

  1. Cold start (engine under 86°F preferred)
  2. Idle in park/neutral for 2–3 minutes
  3. Gentle acceleration to highway speed (55–60 mph), hold for 5 minutes
  4. Several moderate accelerations (25–45 mph) and decelerations
  5. Return to city-speed driving for several miles
  6. Another idle period

The full cycle takes 20–30 minutes. After completing it, plug in your scanner and check "Readiness Monitors." You want to see everything as "Complete" or "Ready."

Most states allow 1–2 "Not Ready" monitors for older vehicles. But if your EVAP or catalyst monitor is incomplete and those are specifically tested, you'll fail.


Step 3: Fix Known Emissions Issues Before Testing

EVAP system leaks (P0440, P0442, P0455): Often a loose or damaged gas cap. Tighten the gas cap first, clear the code, run a drive cycle, and recheck.

Oxygen sensor issues: An oxygen sensor that's reading wrong will show in the drive cycle data and fail the test. Replacement is typically $50–150 in parts.


Step 4: Time Your Visit Right

Don't go in right after clearing codes. Even if you drive around for a day, monitors may not be complete. Check your readiness monitors with a scanner before going to the smog station.

Make sure the MIL (check engine light) has been off for at least two full drive cycles. Testers can see recent cleared codes on some systems.

Top off your gas tank to about 3/4 full. Running near empty can prevent the EVAP monitor from running.

Avoid going in with a cold engine. Drive for 10–15 minutes first so the engine is at operating temperature.


What to Do if You Fail

Get a copy of the failure report — it lists exactly what failed. Common paths:

  • Check engine code: Fix the underlying fault, complete the drive cycle, retest
  • Incomplete monitors: Complete the drive cycle, retest
  • High emissions (if applicable in your state): Diagnose the cause — usually catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, or a fuel mixture problem

Many states have assistance programs for low-income vehicle owners who need repairs to pass a smog check. Check your state's DMV or BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) website.
