A road trip breakdown is the automotive equivalent of a house fire — rare, but when it happens, the damage and disruption is disproportionate to everything else in your day. The vehicle that broke down was "fine" on every commute for the past year. It just met the extra load of sustained highway driving, hot weather, and 600 continuous miles without a rest.
Most roadside breakdowns are preventable. This 20-point inspection takes 45–60 minutes and should be done 1–2 weeks before any trip over 300 miles — not the morning you leave.

1. Engine Oil: Level and Condition
Pull the dipstick. Wipe it, reinsert, pull again. Oil should be between the MIN and MAX marks. Color should be amber to light brown — not black, gritty, or milky.
If it's due for a change within 2,000 miles of your planned mileage, change it before the trip. Don't start a 1,500-mile trip with 800 miles left on the oil.
2. Coolant Level and Condition
Check the reservoir (overflow tank), not the radiator cap directly, with the engine cold. Level should be between MIN and MAX. Coolant should be green, orange/pink (DEX-COOL), or blue depending on the spec — not rusty, brown, or cloudy.
A low coolant level can indicate a slow leak. Find and fix it before a highway trip, not 200 miles in.
3. Brake Fluid Level
Located in a small reservoir near the firewall on the driver's side. Level dropping over time indicates pad wear (normal) or a leak (not normal). If you can't see fluid near the MAX line, top it up and investigate why it's low.
4. Power Steering Fluid
On electric power steering vehicles, this doesn't apply. On hydraulic systems, check the reservoir under the hood. Low fluid causes heavy steering feel and pump whine.
5. Windshield Washer Fluid
This sounds trivial but matters on a highway trip. A bug-covered windshield at 70 mph with an empty washer reservoir is a visibility hazard. Fill it completely.
Tire Inspection (4 Points)
6. Tire Pressure (All Four + Spare)
Cold tire pressure should match the door placard (inside the driver's door jamb), not the maximum sidewall pressure. Check first thing in the morning before driving.
Underinflated tires build heat at highway speeds — this causes premature wear and increases blowout risk. Check all four and the spare.
7. Tread Depth
The minimum legal tread depth is 2/32 of an inch. The point to replace for safety is 4/32. Use the quarter test: insert a quarter upside down into a tread groove. If you can see the top of Washington's head, you're at 4/32 — replace before the trip.
8. Tire Age
Even tires that look good on the surface can be structurally compromised by age. Rubber oxidizes and develops internal cracks after 6–10 years regardless of mileage. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall (the last 4 digits indicate week and year of manufacture). Any tire over 8 years old is suspect.
9. Visual Inspection for Damage
Walk around the car and look at each tire closely. Sidewall bubbles or bulges indicate internal belt separation — the tire can blow out without warning. Cuts, embedded objects, and unusual wear patterns (cupping, one-sided wear) should be addressed before driving 500+ miles.
Brakes (2 Points)
10. Brake Pad Thickness
With the wheels on, look through the wheel spokes at the rotor and caliper. You should be able to see the pad material — it should be at least 3–4mm thick. Less than 3mm on a long trip means you could wear down to metal-on-metal before returning home.
11. Pedal Feel
On a slow-speed test (parking lot or quiet street), press the brake pedal firmly. It should feel firm and stop you squarely without pulling left or right, vibration, or spongy travel. Any change from normal brake feel is worth investigating before a highway trip.
Electrical and Lighting (4 Points)
12. All Exterior Lights
Walk around the car with a helper or use reflections off a wall. Check: headlights (low and high beam), taillights, brake lights, turn signals (front and rear), reverse lights, and hazard flashers. A failed brake light is a rear-end collision risk.
13. Battery Test
If your battery is 4+ years old, have it tested free at AutoZone or O'Reilly before the trip. Batteries often fail in heat (contrary to the cold weather failure narrative — heat degrades them faster). A battery with a weak test result will almost certainly fail before you return.
14. Check Engine Light and Dashboard Warnings
Any warning light on before a long trip deserves a code scan. Many check engine codes represent minor issues, but some — P0300 random misfire, P0420 catalyst efficiency, transmission codes — can indicate conditions that will worsen under sustained highway load.
15. Wiper Blades
Test both front wipers on the windshield with washer fluid. They should clear without streaking or chattering. If they smear, they're due for replacement ($15–25 per pair). Don't drive through a rainstorm with compromised wipers.
Underhood Inspection (3 Points)
16. Serpentine Belt Condition
The serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, and water pump on most vehicles. Inspect it visually for cracking on the ribbed surface, fraying at the edges, or glazing. A belt failure leaves you stranded immediately.
17. Coolant Hoses
Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses when the engine is cold. They should feel firm with slight give — not mushy, hard, or cracked. A soft hose that collapses under slight pressure is near failure.
18. Air Filter
A clogged air filter reduces engine efficiency and fuel economy. Hold the filter up to a light — if you can't see light through it, it's due for replacement ($15–25 and a 5-minute swap).
