What You Need

All cars 1996 and newer are OBD2-compliant. The port is almost always under the dashboard on the driver's side, near the steering column.


Step-by-Step: How to Read OBD2 Codes

Step 1: Locate the OBD2 Port

The port is a 16-pin trapezoidal connector. Common locations:

  • Under the dash, directly below the steering wheel
  • Inside the center console

P0300 — Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire

What it means: The engine is misfiring but the ECU can't isolate it to a single cylinder. Often accompanied by rough idle, hesitation, or loss of power.

Common causes:

  • Worn spark plugs (most common) — check gap and replace if over 60,000 miles
  • Faulty ignition coil — often one coil goes bad; swap coils between cylinders to see if the misfire moves
  • Vacuum leak — listen for hissing near intake manifold, throttle body, or vacuum hoses
  • Fuel injector failure — less common, usually accompanies other fuel trim codes

P0420 — Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What it means: The downstream O2 sensor detects that the catalytic converter isn't converting exhaust gases efficiently enough. This is the most common single cause of failed emissions tests.

Common causes:

  • Failed catalytic converter (most likely if the car is over 100,000 miles)
  • Failed O2 sensor (rear sensor, usually labeled "sensor 2 bank 1")
  • Engine misfire that damaged the converter (raw fuel burns in the cat)
  • Coolant or oil burning in the combustion chamber (internal leaks)

DIY approach:

  1. First, clear the code and see if it returns. Occasionally a bad sensor reading triggers a false P0420.
  2. Check if the rear O2 sensor is functioning — live data should show it "lazy" (not switching frequently like the front sensor).

P0171 / P0174 — System Too Lean (Bank 1 / Bank 2)

What it means: The engine is running lean — not enough fuel relative to air. Can cause rough idle, hesitation, and long-term engine damage.

  • Dirty or failed mass airflow (MAF) sensor — clean it with MAF cleaner spray first

P0441 / P0442 / P0456 — EVAP System Leak

  • Failed camshaft phaser/solenoid
  • Timing chain stretch (more serious — especially on Nissan, GM, and some Ford engines)
