Every vehicle on the road has a 17-character identifier that encodes its entire origin story — where it was built, what engine it has, when it was manufactured, and more. Where Is the VIN?

Your VIN appears in several places:

  • Dashboard (driver's side): Visible through the windshield at the base of the dashboard near the A-pillar. This is the most common location.
  • Driver's door jamb: On a sticker or metal plate on the door frame.
  • Title and registration documents
  • Insurance card
  • Engine block: Stamped directly into the metal
  • Frame rail: Often stamped on the firewall or chassis rail

VIN Structure: 17 Characters, 3 Sections

A standard VIN is divided into three sections:

  1. World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) — positions 1–3

Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

Position 1: Country of Origin

The first character identifies where the vehicle was manufactured (not where the company is headquartered).

A Toyota built in Kentucky starts with "1" — not "J." Many cars sold under foreign brand names are assembled domestically.

Position 2: Manufacturer

The second character narrows down the manufacturer within that country. For example:

  • 1G = General Motors (USA)
  • 1F = Ford Motor Company
  • 1H = Honda (USA plant)
  • 1C = Chrysler/Stellantis

Position 3: Vehicle Type or Division

Combined with positions 1 and 2, position 3 completes the WMI, identifying the specific manufacturing division. For example, 1GT is a GMC truck.


Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section

These five characters encode the vehicle's physical characteristics. They vary significantly by manufacturer and there is no universal standard across all makes.

What these positions typically describe:

  • Position 4: Restraint system, GVWR class, or body style (varies by manufacturer)
  • Position 5: Vehicle line or model series
  • Position 6: Body style (2-door, 4-door, convertible, wagon, etc.)
  • Position 7: Engine type or displacement
  • Position 8: Engine type (the most commonly looked-up position for parts ordering)

Position 8 is particularly important for parts research. The engine code here tells you exactly which powerplant is in the vehicle — critical when ordering parts like timing belts, spark plugs, or gaskets that differ across engine variants.

To decode positions 4–8 for your specific vehicle, use the manufacturer's VIN decoder or a database like the NHTSA VIN decoder (free at nhtsa.gov/vin).


Position 9: Check Digit

Position 9 is a mathematical verification digit calculated from all other VIN characters. It exists to detect fraudulent or incorrectly transcribed VINs.

The formula involves multiplying each character by a position weight and dividing the sum by 11. The remainder is the check digit (X represents 10).

If the check digit doesn't match the formula, the VIN is invalid — likely a transcription error or a forged VIN.


Position 10: Model Year

This is one of the most useful positions for quick identification.

Position 11: Assembly Plant

This character identifies the specific plant where the vehicle was assembled. Each manufacturer uses their own code system. This is useful for recalls (some affect specific plants), build-specific quality issues, and enthusiast research.


Positions 12–17: Production Sequence Number

The last six digits are the sequential production number — the order in which vehicles rolled off the assembly line at that plant in that model year. This is how manufacturers track individual vehicles for recall purposes and warranty claims.

Vehicles with the same name and year often have multiple engine options. A Ford F-150 from any given year might have a 3.3L V6, a 2.7L EcoBoost, a 3.5L EcoBoost, or a 5.0L V8. Ordering by VIN — rather than just year/make/model — ensures you get the right gasket, filter, or timing component.

Most parts store websites have a "shop by VIN" option for this reason.

Pre-Purchase Inspection

Running a VIN through a service like Carfax or the NHTSA's free database reveals:

  • Accident history
  • Number of previous owners
  • Odometer readings from state inspections
  • Open recalls
  • Branded title (salvage, flood, lemon law)
