How to Read Your Car's Dipstick (Oil, Transmission, Power Steering)
The dipstick is one of the simplest diagnostic tools on your car — and one of the most neglected. A 30-second check once a month can prevent engine damage that costs thousands of dollars. Here's how to read each type correctly and what the results mean.

Locating It
The engine oil dipstick is typically a brightly colored loop or handle (yellow or orange on most vehicles) sticking out of the engine block. Look for it near the oil filler cap, which is usually labeled "ENGINE OIL" or has an oil can symbol.
How to Read It Correctly
- Park on level ground and let the engine sit off for at least 3–5 minutes. Hot oil splashing around in the engine gives a false reading.
- Pull the dipstick all the way out and wipe it completely clean with a rag.
- Reinsert it fully — make sure it seats all the way down.
- Pull it out again and read where the oil film ends against the marks.
What the Marks Mean
Most dipsticks have two marks: MIN (or ADD) and MAX (or FULL). The oil level should be between these two marks, ideally closer to MAX. If the level is at or below MIN, add oil — typically 1 quart brings the level from MIN to MAX.
Checking the condition, not just the level:
- Normal: Oil should be amber to light brown and translucent. Some darkening with mileage is normal.
- Black and gritty: Sludge buildup — oil is overdue for a change.
- Milky or foamy: Coolant is mixing with the oil — this indicates a head gasket problem and needs immediate attention.
- Too much oil: Oil above the MAX mark is also a problem. Overfilled oil can foam, lose its lubricating properties, and damage seals.
Automatic Transmission Fluid Dipstick
Not all vehicles have a transmission dipstick — many modern automatics use a "sealed" system with no serviceable dipstick. Check your owner's manual first.
Checking It (When a Dipstick Is Present)
- The engine must be running and at operating temperature. Unlike engine oil, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is checked with the engine warm and running, in Park.
- Pull the dipstick (often located toward the rear of the engine bay, toward the firewall).
- Wipe, reinsert, pull, and read — same process as engine oil.
What You're Looking For
- Level: Between the MIN and MAX marks (use the HOT range when engine is at operating temperature).
- Color: New ATF is bright red. Pinkish-red is normal for used fluid. Dark brown to black with a burnt smell means the fluid needs changing.
- Texture: Should be smooth and slippery. If it looks murky or has particles, a flush is overdue.
Power Steering Fluid Dipstick
Many newer vehicles have electric power steering with no fluid reservoir. On vehicles with hydraulic power steering, the reservoir is typically a small plastic container (usually labeled "POWER STEERING") on the side of the engine bay.
How to Check It
Some reservoirs have a dipstick built into the cap; others have MIN/MAX marks on the side of the reservoir that you read visually with the cap on.
- With the engine cold, unscrew the cap.
- If there's a dipstick on the cap, wipe it and read the level.
- If the reservoir has side markings, read where the fluid sits against the MIN/MAX marks.
What You're Looking For
- Level: Between MIN and MAX.
- Color: Should be light amber to pink. Dark brown means oxidation and the fluid needs replacing.
- Signs of trouble: If the reservoir is consistently low, there's a leak somewhere in the system — hoses, pump, or rack. Low power steering fluid causes hard steering and whining from the pump.
How Often to Check
Engine oil: Every 1,000 miles or once a month — whichever comes first.
Transmission fluid: Every 30,000 miles or when you notice shift hesitation or roughness.
Power steering fluid: Every 30,000 miles or when you notice steering stiffness or pump noise.
