How to Replace a Radiator at Home — Drain, Swap, Fill, and Burp It Right

A cracked, leaking, or internally clogged radiator causes overheating that can destroy an engine in minutes. Shops charge $300–$600 in labor to swap one. The part costs $80–$200. With basic tools and a driveway, this is a 2–3 hour job that anyone can do.

  • Socket set (metric and SAE, 3/8" and 1/2" drive)
  • Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon capacity)
  • Funnel
  • Fresh coolant (50/50 pre-mix — enough for your system capacity, typically 1.5–2 gallons)
  • Distilled water (for top-off)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for spring hose clamps)
  • Flashlight
  • Compressed air or rag (to cap open lines)
  • New radiator (OEM-spec or quality aftermarket)
  • New radiator drain plug washer (usually $1–$2)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Pressurized hot coolant is dangerous. Wait a minimum of 2 hours after the last run.

  2. Drain the coolant. Open the radiator drain petcock at the bottom of the radiator — usually a plastic valve or plug. If there's no petcock, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and pull the hose off the radiator outlet to drain. Catch all coolant in the drain pan. Used coolant is toxic to pets — dispose of it properly at an auto parts store recycling drop.

  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose. Loosen the hose clamp and twist the hose off the radiator neck. If it's stuck, work a flathead around the connection to break the seal — don't yank.

  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose. Most of the coolant will have drained by now. Loosen the clamp and pull the lower hose off the radiator outlet.

  5. Disconnect transmission cooler lines (if automatic transmission). On vehicles with an automatic transmission, two metal or rubber lines run into the lower portion of the radiator for transmission fluid cooling. Use a flare nut wrench on metal fittings. Cap the lines with rags or hose caps to prevent draining.

  6. Disconnect the overflow hose and fan shroud. The thin hose running to the coolant reservoir disconnects by hand. The fan shroud may be clipped or bolted to the radiator — remove it and set it aside. On FWD vehicles, the shroud often has to come out with the radiator.

  7. Remove the radiator mounting hardware. Most radiators are held by two bolts at the top and sit in rubber mounts at the bottom. Remove the bolts and carefully lift the radiator straight up. It may be heavy — drain it completely first.

  8. Transfer components to the new radiator. Some radiators have drain plug fittings, sensor ports, or bleeder valves that must be transferred from the old unit. Compare the old and new radiators side-by-side before installing.

  9. Set the new radiator into the mounts. Make sure the lower mounting tabs seat fully in the rubber bushings. A radiator that's not seated properly vibrates and cracks fittings over time.

  10. Reconnect everything in reverse order. Fan shroud → transmission cooler lines → lower hose → upper hose → overflow hose → mounting bolts. Snug all hose clamps firmly.

  11. Fill with fresh coolant and bleed the air. Fill the radiator and overflow reservoir with 50/50 coolant mix. Start the engine with the heater on full heat — this circulates coolant through the heater core and helps bleed air. Squeeze the upper radiator hose a few times to dislodge air pockets. Add coolant as the level drops.

  12. Watch the temperature gauge and check for leaks. Let the engine reach operating temp, watch for the thermostat to open (temp rises then stabilizes), and visually inspect all connections for drips. Burp the system until the upper hose is firm and hot with no air pockets coming out.

Pro Tips

  • Change the thermostat while the cooling system is open — it's already accessible, costs $15–$25, and you're already refilling the coolant anyway. Two birds, one flush.
  • OEM or quality aftermarket radiators only — cheap radiators have thin tanks and poor core construction. They fail within 12–18 months. Spend the extra $30 for a quality unit with a warranty.
  • Burp time varies by vehicle — some cooling systems take 15 minutes to burp; others take 30–45 minutes of idling and driving. Don't assume you're done just because the level looks stable in the driveway.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the transmission cooler line caps — leaving transmission lines open drains transmission fluid. Even a 10-minute delay can drop the fluid low enough to cause damage on startup. Cap them immediately.
  • Not filling to the correct level — coolant that's 1–2 inches low prevents the heater core from getting flow, causing no heat even after a perfect radiator swap. Fill to the full mark in the reservoir.
  • Forgetting to burp the system — trapped air pockets cause phantom overheating, heater problems, and false readings on the temp gauge. Spend the time to burp it properly before driving.
