- Pickle fork or tie rod end puller (preferred)
- Torque wrench
- Cotter pin (new, never reuse old ones)
- Tape measure or marker
- Anti-seize

Inspect before you remove anything. Grab the front tire at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and try to wiggle it. Play in this direction (horizontal) points to tie rod or steering rack wear. Vertical play points to wheel bearings or ball joints. With your hands at 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock, push and pull — that's tie rod territory.

Lift the vehicle and remove the wheel. Support on jack stands. Never work under a car supported only by a floor jack.

Count the tie rod end threads. Before removing the outer tie rod end, count the number of exposed threads on the inner tie rod end. Write it down. This tells you how many turns to install the new one to approximate the original alignment. It's not a substitute for an alignment, but it keeps the car driveable.

Remove the cotter pin and castle nut. Cut the cotter pin with side cutters. Remove the castle nut. Keep the nut — you'll need it to reinstall.

Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a tie rod end separator or pickle fork. Place it between the knuckle and the tie rod end taper, and strike with a hammer. The taper will pop free. Don't hit the tie rod stud directly — you'll damage the threads.

Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner. Hold the inner tie rod with an adjustable wrench on the flats while you unscrew the outer. Count the turns it takes to come off — note this number.

Thread on the new tie rod end. Install the new outer end the same number of turns it took to remove the old one. This preserves the approximate thread-to-thread length for driveable alignment.

Insert the stud into the knuckle and install the castle nut. Torque to spec (usually 35–55 ft-lbs). Tighten to the next cotter pin hole — never loosen to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin and bend both legs.

Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle. Torque lug nuts to spec.

Drive to an alignment shop. The thread-counting method is an approximation. Toe settings affect tire wear dramatically — even slight misalignment eats the inside or outside edge of a tire within a few thousand miles. Get it aligned.
Pro Tips
- Replace both outer tie rod ends if one is bad — they wear at similar rates. If one is worn, the other is close behind. Replacing both now means one alignment charge instead of two.
- Inspect the inner tie rod while you're here — grab the inner rod and push/pull it axially. Any looseness means the inner is also worn. They're about $25 each.
- Penetrating oil on the castle nut the day before — on older vehicles, the castle nut is welded to the stud with rust. Overnight soak prevents a broken stud situation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Reusing the old cotter pin — cotter pins are one-time use. A straightened cotter pin is not safe. Buy a pack — they cost $2.
- Hitting the threaded stud with a hammer — this mushrooms the threads and makes the nut impossible to install. Use a separator tool.
- Skipping the alignment — tie rods set toe angle. Even if your thread count is perfect, the car needs a proper alignment check. Misaligned toe is the fastest way to destroy a tire.
