Step-by-Step Ball Joint Replacement

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
Jack up the vehicle per the manufacturer's lift points. Place jack stands under the frame. Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.

Step 7: Support the Knuckle

Using the ball joint press kit, select the correct adapters to press the old joint out of the control arm bore. Press through from the control arm side, catching the old joint on the other side.

- Insert the ball joint stud into the knuckle bore
- Thread on the nut and torque to spec (check your service manual — typically 50–120 ft-lb)
- Install a new cotter pin if applicable
- Reinstall wheel and torque lug nuts to spec
After Replacement: Alignment Required
Every ball joint replacement requires a wheel alignment. Ball joints affect camber and caster angles. Even if the joint was replaced perfectly, the alignment is now unknown. Drive without alignment and you'll wear through new tires in 10,000–15,000 miles.
