  • Brake line wrench (flare nut wrench) — 10mm or 11mm

  • Fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Confirm it's the caliper and not the pads. A seized caliper shows up as: the car pulling to one side under braking, one rotor that runs significantly hotter than the other, a wheel that won't spin freely by hand when the car is jacked up, or uneven pad wear (one pad paper-thin, the other nearly new).

  2. Remove the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Use a turkey baster to suck out half the fluid before you push the piston back. If you don't, the master cylinder overflows when you compress the caliper piston.

  3. Jack up and support the vehicle safely. Remove the wheel.

  4. Cap the brake line before disconnecting. If you have brake line caps or a brake hose pinch clamp, use them. This prevents gravity from draining the brake line and needing to bleed the full system. If you don't cap it, fluid will slowly drip — manage it with a rag.

  5. Remove the caliper mounting bolts. Usually two bolts on the caliper bracket. These are torqued tight — breaker bar or impact wrench.

  6. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper. Use a flare nut wrench — not a regular open-end. These fittings round easily. Have a rag ready for fluid drip. If the fitting is seized, penetrating oil and patience.

  7. Remove the caliper from the bracket. Slide pins (the bolts you removed) should come with the caliper. Inspect the slide pin boots — if they're torn or dry, clean the slide pins and apply fresh caliper grease or anti-seize before reinstalling.

  8. Install the new caliper. Thread the brake line in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then snug with the flare nut wrench. Don't overtighten — brake fittings are soft and strip. Torque the caliper mounting bolts to spec (typically 25–44 ft-lbs depending on the vehicle).

  9. Bleed the brake circuit. Since you disconnected the brake line, you introduced air into that corner's circuit. You must bleed it before driving. Use a vacuum bleeder or one-man bleeder kit (see our guide on bleeding brakes solo). Bleed until no bubbles come out and the pedal is firm.

  10. Reinstall the wheel, lower the car, and pump the pedal. Before driving, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times with the car running to seat the new caliper piston against the pads. The first pump or two will go to the floor — this is normal. Pedal should be firm by the third or fourth pump.

  • Buy a "loaded" caliper (includes new pads and hardware) if your pads have any wear — it's $20–$40 more than a bare caliper but ensures everything is fresh and properly matched.
  • Replace calipers in axle pairs if one is seized — a caliper seized on one side means the other side has been overworking for however long. Match them.
  • Lubricate the slide pins — dry slide pins are the most common cause of calipers seizing in the first place. Clean and grease them on every brake job.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not pumping the pedal before driving — the piston needs to seat against the pads. Driving with a soft pedal to the floor is dangerous. Pump it to firmness in the driveway.
  • Using an open-end wrench on the brake line fitting — this rounds the fitting and creates a leak. Always use a flare nut wrench.
  • Forgetting to top off and bleed — air in the brake line from caliper replacement causes a soft pedal indefinitely until it's bled out. Don't skip the bleed.
