How to Replace a Radiator Hose Before It Fails on You
Radiator hoses are under pressure, running between 190–220°F engine coolant, every time you drive. When one blows, your engine overheats within minutes. A new hose costs $15–$40. Ignoring a cracked or spongy hose until it lets go can mean a warped head and a $1,500+ repair. Replace it yourself — it's a 30-minute job.

- Phillips screwdriver (for worm-drive clamps)
- Drain pan or bucket
- Fresh coolant (50/50 mix, or concentrated + distilled water)
- Funnel
- Shop towels
- Safety glasses
When to Replace Radiator Hoses
Replace a hose when it's:
- Soft and spongy when squeezed cold — internal deterioration
- Hard and brittle — cracking from heat cycling
- Swollen at the ends — near-failure
- Seeping or showing staining at the clamp connections
- Over 5 years old — many mechanics replace as preventive maintenance
If you're replacing one hose, inspect both. If both are old, replace both — the labor overlap is minimal and you're already draining the coolant.
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool Completely
Never open the cooling system on a hot engine. Pressurized hot coolant will spray and cause severe burns. Wait at least 2 hours after running, or work on a cold engine. The radiator cap has a warning for a reason — respect it.
Step 2: Drain the Coolant
Place your drain pan under the radiator. Most radiators have a drain petcock at the bottom corner — open it and let coolant drain. If there's no petcock, you can remove the lower hose first (carefully, with the pan positioned) to drain.
Save drained coolant in a sealed container if it's relatively clean — coolant is toxic to animals and must be disposed of properly, not poured down a drain or on the ground.
Step 3: Loosen the Hose Clamps
There are two hose clamps at each end of the hose — at the radiator fitting and at the engine (thermostat housing for the upper hose, water pump for the lower hose). Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze spring clamps and slide them down the hose. For worm-drive clamps, use a screwdriver or 1/4" drive socket to back them out.
Slide both clamps down the hose away from the fitting ends.
Step 4: Remove the Hose
Twist and pull the hose off each fitting. Hoses bond to fittings after years of heat — they won't slide off easily. Use a pick tool to gently break the seal at the fitting edge. Avoid prying with a screwdriver against the radiator — aluminum fittings crack easily.
If it won't budge: score around the hose end with a utility knife (carefully, avoiding the metal fitting) to split the old hose off. You're replacing it anyway.
Step 5: Clean the Fittings
Scrape away any old hose material from the metal fittings with a pick or utility knife. Wipe clean with a shop towel. A clean surface ensures a leak-free seal.
Step 6: Install the New Hose
Slide both clamps onto the new hose before installing. Push the hose fully onto each fitting — it should seat until you feel it bottom out on the fitting bead. Position the clamps within 1/4" of the hose end, over the fitting bead.
Tighten worm-drive clamps firmly (but not so tight you cut the hose). Snap spring clamps back to their seated position over the fitting bead.
Step 7: Refill the Coolant System
Close the drain petcock. Pour in fresh coolant through the radiator or reservoir. Use the correct coolant type for your vehicle (check the reservoir cap or owner's manual — colors and formulations vary). Fill slowly to purge air.
Step 8: Burp the System
Many cooling systems trap air after a drain. To purge air bubbles: fill the coolant, replace the cap, start the engine with the heater on full blast. Let it reach operating temperature. Watch the temperature gauge — it should stabilize at normal. If it climbs toward hot, turn off immediately and check coolant level.
Some vehicles have a bleed screw on the thermostat housing to release trapped air. Check your service manual.
Step 9: Check for Leaks
After the engine has run to temperature and cooled back down, check all four clamp connections for seepage. Wipe dry and check again after a second heat cycle.
Signs You Have Other Cooling System Problems
If a new hose doesn't fix an overheating issue, inspect:
- Thermostat (cheap — replace if you're already in there)
- Water pump (check for bearing play and weeping from the vent hole)
- Head gasket (white exhaust smoke, milky oil — serious)
