- Breaker bar and socket set (metric)
- Torque wrench
- Pickle fork or ball joint separator
- Pry bar
- Wire brush
- Penetrating oil
- Anti-seize compound
- Marker or paint pen (for camber bolt position)
Step-by-Step Instructions

Spray all fasteners with penetrating oil the night before. Strut bolts, steering knuckle pinch bolt, and sway bar link nut — these are almost always corroded. Soaking them overnight is the difference between a 3-hour job and a 6-hour job.

Safely lift and support the vehicle. Jack up the front, place jack stands under the subframe or frame rails — not the control arm. Remove the wheel.

Mark the camber bolt position. If your strut has eccentric (camber-adjusting) bolts, mark their position with a paint pen before loosening. This preserves your alignment enough to drive to the alignment shop afterward. Note: you still need an alignment after strut replacement — this just keeps it driveable.

Disconnect the sway bar link. Use a hex key in the center of the link stud to hold it while you loosen the nut. These snap off if they're rusty — penetrating oil helps.

Disconnect the ABS sensor wire and brake hose bracket. Pop the ABS wire out of its clip and unbolt the brake hose bracket from the strut body. Don't stretch or kink the ABS wire.

Remove the steering knuckle-to-strut bolts. These are usually two large bolts through the bottom of the strut. Break them loose with the breaker bar. A stuck pinch bolt may need a pry bar to spread the knuckle ear slightly.

Remove the top strut mount nuts inside the engine bay. Open the hood and look at the strut tower — three or four nuts hold the top mount. Hold the strut up from below while removing the last nut so it doesn't drop.

Install the spring compressor and compress the spring. THIS IS THE CRITICAL STEP. Use a proper rented spring compressor — not a cheap two-hook style. Compress the spring equally on both sides until it's loose from the upper mount. Double-check that the compressor hooks are fully seated on the spring coils before turning.

Remove the strut nut and disassemble. With spring compressed, use a strut socket or box wrench to hold the shaft and remove the top nut. Pull off the upper mount, bearing plate, spring, and bump stop. Inspect all components and replace worn bump stops.

Assemble the new strut. Compress the new spring, install bump stop, spring, bearing plate, and upper mount onto the new strut body. Torque the center nut to spec. Release the spring compressor slowly and evenly.

Install and torque everything to spec. Reverse the removal. Torque the steering knuckle bolts to spec (typically 80–130 ft-lbs depending on vehicle). Torque top mount nuts to spec. Do not skip torque specs on suspension components.

Get an alignment. Non-negotiable after strut replacement. Even with marked camber bolts, driving more than 20 miles before alignment will cause abnormal tire wear.
Pro Tips
- Quick-strut assemblies (strut + spring pre-assembled) cost more but eliminate spring compressor work entirely. For tight spaces or first-timers, the extra $40–$60 per corner is worth it.
- Replace struts in axle pairs — replacing only one front strut causes handling imbalance. Always do both sides at the same time.
- Inspect control arm bushings while you're in there — if they're cracked, replace them now. You're already doing the alignment.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using an inadequate spring compressor — a spring under compression stores tremendous energy. A cheap two-hook compressor slipping off the spring can cause serious injury. Rent a proper coil spring compressor from a parts store.
- Forgetting to torque the center strut nut — a loose top nut causes clunking and can eventually separate. Torque it before releasing the spring compressor.
- Skipping the alignment — strut replacement almost always shifts camber and caster. Skipping alignment eats tires and makes the car pull.
