Choosing the Right Blades
Wiper blades are sold by length, and your driver side is almost always longer than the passenger side. Check your owner's manual or use the fit guide at any auto parts store (they have binders with vehicle lookup). Buy the pair — if one's worn, the other is too.
Types of wiper blades:
- Traditional frame blades — wire frame with rubber insert. Cheap, replaceable rubber refills available.
- Beam (bracketless) blades — solid curved rubber, no frame. Better all-weather performance. More expensive.
- Hybrid blades — rubber blade inside a protective cover. Mid-range performance and price.
All three install the same way — the attachment mechanism is what varies.
Common Attachment Types
Most modern vehicles use one of these:
- Hook/J-hook (most common) — wiper arm has a curved hook end
- Pinch tab — requires pinching a tab to release
- Side pin — blade slides on from the side
- Top lock — press a button on top

Step-by-Step: Replacing Wiper Blades (Hook-Style)
Step 1: Lift the Wiper Arm
Pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the raised position (perpendicular to the glass). It'll click into place. Important: Lay a folded towel on the windshield first. If the arm snaps back without a blade, it can crack the glass.
Step 2: Find the Release Tab
Look at the point where the blade meets the arm. There's a small plastic tab or button — this is the release. On hook-style arms, it's usually on the underside of the connection point.
Step 3: Rotate and Remove the Blade
Pivot the blade to about 90 degrees from the arm (perpendicular). Press the release tab and slide the blade down and off the hook. Some blades unhook by tilting, others slide straight off. If it doesn't release immediately, look for a secondary lock.
Step 4: Attach the New Blade
Slide the new blade onto the hook in the same orientation. You'll hear a click when it locks in. Give it a firm pull to make sure it's seated — a blade that flies off at 70 mph is a serious problem.
Step 5: Lower the Arm Gently
Don't just let it snap down. Guide it onto the windshield glass. Lower the arm carefully.
Step 6: Repeat on the Other Side
Same process. Some passenger-side arms are smaller — use the correct blade size.
Step 7: Test
Turn on your wipers with washer fluid. Both blades should sweep cleanly without chattering, streaking, or lifting. If one chatters, check that it's fully locked onto the arm.
Rear Wiper Replacement
Same process, different blade size. Rear wipers often use a pin-mount or a small hook. The blade is shorter. Check your rear wiper arm type before buying.
How Often Should You Replace Wiper Blades?
Every 6–12 months, or at the first sign of streaking and skipping. Blades degrade faster in hot climates (UV breaks down rubber). In winter climates, consider winter-specific blades with a rubber boot to prevent ice buildup.
Safety First
If you can't see clearly in rain, those wipers are a safety hazard. This is one maintenance item that directly affects your ability to avoid accidents. Don't put it off.
