Whether you're putting away a summer convertible for winter, storing a project car during a move, or stashing a collector vehicle for the off-season, proper storage preparation makes a significant difference in what you find when you come back. A car stored properly for six months is almost as easy to bring back to life as it was to put away. A car stored carelessly can have a dead battery, flat-spotted tires, a gummed-up fuel system, and a layer of rodent nesting material by the time you return.

1. Change the Oil First
Old oil contains combustion byproducts — acids that corrode engine bearings during storage. Change the oil before putting the car away, not after. You want clean oil sitting in the engine, protecting metal surfaces.
Run the engine after the oil change to circulate the fresh oil, then shut it off.
2. Add Fuel Stabilizer
Gasoline starts degrading in about 30 days. Ethanol-blended fuel (E10, which is almost everything at the pump now) separates and absorbs moisture even faster, leaving behind gum and varnish deposits in the fuel system.
Add a quality fuel stabilizer (Sta-Bil, PRI-G, or similar) to a full tank of fresh fuel before storage. Run the engine for 10–15 minutes to circulate the treated fuel through the injectors and fuel lines. A full tank also reduces the air space where condensation can form.
3. Inflate Tires to Maximum Recommended Pressure
Tires lose 1–2 PSI per month at room temperature, and faster in cold storage. Check and inflate to the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall (not the door jamb spec — use the maximum sidewall spec for storage). This reduces flat spotting during long periods of inactivity.
If storing for more than 3–4 months, consider placing the car on jack stands to completely unload the tires.
4. Disconnect or Maintain the Battery
A vehicle battery will self-discharge over time, even with nothing drawing power. A fully discharged lead-acid battery can sulfate (the plates develop lead sulfate crystals), permanently reducing capacity.
Option A: Disconnect the negative terminal. The battery will still discharge slowly, but no parasitic draw from the car's electronics will accelerate it.
Option B: Connect a battery tender (trickle charger) — the best option for storage longer than 30 days. Battery tenders maintain a full charge without overcharging. Cost: $20–$40.
5. Clean the Car Thoroughly
Wash and wax the exterior before storage. Dirt, bird droppings, and tree sap are acidic and will etch paint over months. Apply a fresh coat of wax or sealant as a protective barrier.
Clean the interior completely — food residue attracts rodents. Don't leave anything organic in the cabin.
6. Protect the Interior
Place a desiccant (silica gel or DampRid) in the cabin to absorb moisture. This prevents mold, mildew, and musty odors.
7. Handle Brake Corrosion
If you live in a humid climate or near the coast, brake rotors will develop surface rust during storage — this is normal and clears after the first few brake applications. For long-term storage, you can apply a light coat of spray wax or LPS-type corrosion inhibitor to bare rotor surfaces.
Do not engage the parking brake during storage. The rear brake pads or shoes can bond to the rotors over time, especially in humid conditions. Use wheel chocks instead.
8. Plug Exhaust and Intake Openings
Mice and other rodents will enter cars through the exhaust pipe and air intake. Stuff a rag loosely into the exhaust outlet and the air intake. Put a note on the steering wheel reminding yourself to remove them before starting.
9. Rodent Deterrents
Rodents cause significant damage in stored vehicles — nesting in air filters, chewing wiring, and destroying cabin insulation. Options:
- Place dryer sheets throughout the interior and engine bay (rodents dislike the scent)
- Use peppermint oil-soaked cotton balls
- Place ultrasonic deterrents in the storage space
- Set snap traps around the perimeter of the storage area
10. Cover the Car
A quality car cover protects the paint from UV, dust, and scratches. Use a breathable cover (not plastic tarps) to prevent moisture trapping. Indoor covers are designed for this — outdoor covers are overkill for garage storage and often trap more moisture than they prevent.
During Storage: Monthly Checks
Battery Tender Check
If using a battery tender, verify it's still connected and showing a maintenance/float charge status. Most tenders have an LED that shows green when in float mode.

- Check for fluid leaks under the car
- Check tires for any visible flat-spotting (visible deformation at the contact patch)

Engine Start (Optional, Debated)
Some sources recommend starting the engine monthly to circulate fluids and maintain seals. Others argue that short runs can cause more harm than good by introducing condensation without fully cycling it out.
If you do start it, let it run for at least 15–20 minutes to reach full operating temperature. A short cold start and immediate shutdown leaves moisture in the oil and exhaust without burning it off.
Taking the Car Out of Storage
When you're ready to bring the car back out, don't just start it and drive. Follow this checklist first:
Pre-Start Checks
- Remove exhaust and intake plugs (critical — starting with a blocked exhaust can cause significant damage)
- Remove wheel chocks
- Reconnect the battery if disconnected
- Check tire pressure — inflate to the door jamb spec
- Inspect under the car for rodent damage or fluid leaks
- Check all fluid levels: oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering, transmission
First Start
Prime the fuel system before cranking if the car has been sitting more than 3 months — cycle the ignition to On (not Start) for 5–10 seconds, off, then On again, repeating 2–3 times to build fuel pressure before cranking.
Start the engine and let it idle until warm. Listen for anything unusual.
First Drive
Take a slow first drive. Test the brakes at low speed — surface rust on rotors will cause slight pulsation initially, which clears after a few stops. Don't make any hard stops until the brakes have self-cleaned.
Get an oil change if the car sat for more than 6 months, regardless of when the last oil change was done.
