The Impact Wrench

An impact wrench uses a rotating mass and hammer mechanism to deliver high-torque rotational force in rapid pulses. The key characteristic: it applies force in short bursts, not continuously. This makes it extremely effective at breaking loose stuck or high-torque fasteners.

Types:

  • Pneumatic (air-powered): The traditional shop tool. Requires an air compressor. Most powerful option, typically 150–300+ ft-lbs.
  • Corded electric: Less common, nearly as powerful as pneumatic, needs an outlet nearby.

The Torque Wrench

  • Click torque wrench: Clicks when target torque is reached. Most common for automotive use.
  • Beam torque wrench: A pointer indicates torque on a scale. Accurate and inexpensive but awkward to read.
  • Digital torque wrench: Electronic readout. High accuracy, higher price.

When to Use an Impact Wrench

Breaking Loose Fasteners

This is the impact wrench's strongest use case. Lug nuts corroded onto the hub. Drain plugs that have been overtightened 50 times. Caliper bolts on a car from a northern salt state. The impact's pulsing action provides more effective penetration against corrosion than any amount of leverage.

Lug Nuts — Removal Only

The impact wrench is the right tool to remove lug nuts quickly. Most 18V cordless impacts are set to just above the factory torque spec for removal — they come off fast and safely.

Critical: Do NOT use a standard impact wrench to final-tighten lug nuts. Cordless impacts don't have precise torque control. You'll either overtighten (warping brake rotors, stretching wheel studs) or not know how tight you've actually gone.

Heavy Fasteners in Non-Critical Locations

Exhaust manifold bolts, engine mounts, subframe bolts — big fasteners on structural components that don't have precise torque requirements. Use the impact to run them down and snug; finish with a torque wrench if specs are provided.

Suspension Work: Removal

Control arm bolts, strut tower nuts, tie rod ends. Get them off fast with the impact, then install with precise torque specs using the click wrench.


When to Use a Torque Wrench

Lug Nuts — Installation Always

This is the most important torque wrench application for most home mechanics. Lug nuts must be torqued to spec:

  • Most passenger cars: 80–100 ft-lbs
  • Trucks and SUVs: 100–140 ft-lbs
  • Performance vehicles: check the manual

Using an impact for final tightening leads to inconsistent results. A wheel that's cross-threaded or unevenly torqued can loosen while driving — the consequences are severe.

Brake Caliper Bolts

Caliper bracket bolts are typically 90–115 ft-lbs on most vehicles. Slide pin bolts are much lower (25–45 ft-lbs). Overtightening caliper hardware with an impact can crack the bracket; undertightening causes brake shimmy or caliper movement under load.

Cylinder Head Bolts and Spark Plugs

Head bolt torque sequences are critical to proper gasket sealing. Spark plug torque prevents overtightening (cracked ceramic insulator) and undertightening (blowout). These are torque-wrench-only jobs.

Suspension Fasteners on Installation

Control arm bolts, ball joint nuts, tie rod end nuts — these all have specific torque values. Many suspension fasteners also require torquing with the suspension loaded (vehicle weight on wheels) rather than hanging.

Oil Drain Plugs

The most commonly overtightened fastener in DIY maintenance. The spec is usually 25–35 ft-lbs. An impact wrench routinely exceeds 100 ft-lbs on these plugs. Use a torque wrench every time, and you'll never strip an oil pan thread again.


The Most Common Mistake

Using an impact wrench to tighten lug nuts and assuming the job is done.

A standard cordless impact at full power can apply anywhere from 80 to 400+ ft-lbs depending on the model and setting. Without a torque spec, you have no idea where you've landed. Do this long enough, and you'll experience: warped brake rotors (overtightening), or a wheel that came loose (undertightening).

The fix is simple: use the impact to run lug nuts down quickly, then finish every wheel with a click torque wrench at the correct spec.
