What an Impact Wrench Does

An impact wrench is a power tool that delivers high torque through rapid rotational impacts — typically hundreds of hammer blows per minute on top of the spinning action. The result is massive torque output with minimal reaction force on the user.

They come in three flavors:

  • Electric corded — consistent power, good for shop use
  • Cordless battery-powered — portable, most popular for home use, 18V–20V platforms
  • Pneumatic (air-powered) — highest torque output, requires an air compressor

What Impact Wrenches Are For

Impact wrenches are for speed and removal. They shine when you need to break loose a stubborn lug nut, spin off a crankshaft bolt, remove a rusty exhaust flange, or tear down a suspension component. They get the fastener moving fast.

They are not precision tools. You cannot reliably stop an impact wrench at a specific torque value. When you use an impact to install fasteners, you're guessing at the final torque — and that guess is usually wrong in one direction or the other.


What a Torque Wrench Does

A torque wrench is a precision hand tool that applies a measured, specific amount of rotational force to a fastener. You set the target torque, tighten until the wrench clicks (or beeps, or the needle hits the mark), and stop. That's it.

Types of Torque Wrenches

Click-type — the industry standard for automotive work. Set the target torque on the adjustable handle, tighten until you feel/hear the click, stop. Do not continue tightening after the click. Accurate, durable, and resets automatically. Most DIYers should own one of these.

Beam-type — old-school, simple, no moving parts. A pointer arm moves against a scale as you tighten. No calibration required, never needs adjustment. Less convenient but never goes out of spec.

Digital/electronic — shows real-time torque on a display, often beeps when target is reached. More expensive. Good for tight quarters where you can't feel the click on a conventional wrench.

Angle torque wrench (torque angle) — used for stretch bolts, particularly head bolts and some wheel hub bolts. You torque to an initial spec, then rotate the fastener an additional specified angle (e.g., "tighten to 20 ft-lb, then turn 90°"). You need a torque angle gauge or a digital wrench with that function.


The Critical Difference: Precision vs. Speed

This is the rule:

  • Impact wrench = fast, for removal or initial run-down of fasteners
  • Torque wrench = precise, for final tightening to spec

The impact wrench removes the wheel. The torque wrench puts it back on correctly.


When Torque Specs Actually Matter (And When They Really Don't)

Some fasteners require precision. Others don't.

High-Stakes Fasteners (Always Use a Torque Wrench)

Lug nuts and wheel bolts — the spec exists because under-torque means the wheel can work loose and over-torque strips or stretches the stud, cracks the rotor hat, or warps the brake rotor. Typical spec: 80–100 ft-lb for most passenger cars, 120–145 ft-lb for trucks and SUVs. These values matter.

Cylinder head bolts — must be torqued in sequence to precise specs, often in multiple stages. Head gaskets don't seal if the load isn't even.

Main bearing caps and rod bolts — engine assembly without a torque wrench is engine failure waiting to happen.

Suspension fasteners — control arm bolts, strut top nuts, tie rod end jam nuts. These must be torqued with the suspension at ride height for many vehicles. Under-torque here causes looseness and accelerated wear; over-torque strips threads.

Spark plugs — especially aluminum heads. Over-torque strips the threads, and re-threading an aluminum head is an expensive mistake.

Brake caliper bolts — over-torque here cracks the caliper bracket.

Lower-Stakes Fasteners (Impact Fine for Final Tighten)

Drain plugs, air intake clamps, battery terminals, splash shields — the consequences of being slightly off-spec are minimal and adjustable. Use your judgment here, but if you're unsure, check the spec.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

Finishing Lug Nuts With an Impact

This is the single most common mistake DIYers and even tire shops make. An impact wrench set too high will over-torque lug nuts past the rated spec, stretch wheel studs, and warp brake rotors. If the rotor gets uneven clamping force, you'll feel a brake pulsation the next time you slow down from highway speed.

Fix: Use the impact to run the lug nuts down snug, then switch to a torque wrench for the final tighten. Always torque in a star pattern.

Not Zeroing the Click Wrench When Storing It

Leave a click-type torque wrench set at high torque for months and you'll stress the internal spring, which changes the calibration. Before storing, back the setting down to the lowest value on the scale (not zero, but minimum). This preserves the spring tension and keeps the tool in spec.

Treating a Torque Wrench Like a Breaker Bar

Torque wrenches are designed to tighten. They're not rated for removal — using one to break a stubborn fastener loose can damage the internal click mechanism. Use a breaker bar or impact for loosening.

Ignoring Lubrication Conditions

Torque specs assume a clean, dry thread unless stated otherwise. If you're applying anti-seize or thread lubricant, you need to reduce the torque spec accordingly — lube reduces friction, which means the same torque value creates higher clamp force. Some fasteners call for thread lubricant with a reduced spec. Check your service manual.


What to Buy

Impact Wrench

For a home mechanic, a cordless 1/2" impact wrench on an 18V–20V platform is the standard choice. At least 250 ft-lb of breakaway torque is the minimum; 400+ ft-lb handles most truck lug nuts and stubborn fasteners. Brands like Milwaukee (M18), DeWalt (20V MAX), and Makita (18V LXT) make tools that will outlast you.

If you already have a compressor, a 1/2" pneumatic impact from Ingersoll Rand or Snap-on is hard to beat on raw power-to-cost ratio.

Torque Wrench
