How the Alternator Works

The alternator is driven by the serpentine belt and generates AC electrical current, which is converted to DC to charge the battery and power the car's electrical systems while the engine is running. A healthy alternator produces 13.5–14.7 volts. When it fails, the car runs entirely off battery — which runs out quickly.


Sign 1: Battery Warning Light On

The battery-shaped warning light on your dashboard doesn't just mean your battery is failing — it monitors the entire charging system, including the alternator. If this light comes on and your battery tested fine recently, the alternator is a strong suspect.

The light typically triggers when the alternator's output voltage drops below 13.5V or rises above 16V (overcharging is less common but also dangerous).


Sign 2: Battery Dies Repeatedly

If you jump-start the car and it dies again within a few miles, the alternator isn't recharging the battery. A healthy battery that's jump-started will recover and stay charged if the alternator is working. If you're jump-starting the same car every day, test the alternator — not just the battery.


Sign 3: Dimming or Flickering Lights

The alternator powers your lights while driving. When it's weak or failing, it may not produce enough current to maintain steady light output — especially when load increases (AC on, radio loud, rear defroster running). Lights that flicker or dim noticeably under load point to the alternator.


Sign 4: Electrical Components Behaving Strangely

Slow power windows. Sluggish infotainment system. HVAC fan running at the wrong speed. Radio cutting out. When the alternator isn't providing enough power, electronics behave erratically as the system prioritizes what power is available.


Sign 5: Growling or Whining Noise

A failing alternator bearing produces a grinding, growling, or whining sound that increases with engine speed. If you hear this from the front of the engine — and it changes pitch as you rev the engine — suspect the alternator bearing or pulley. This sound can also come from a worn serpentine belt, so check both.


Sign 6: Burning Smell

An overloaded alternator or one with worn insulation on the wiring can produce a burning smell — often described as burning rubber or an electrical smell. This is a sign the alternator is working too hard or has internal damage. Don't ignore it.


Sign 7: The Car Stalls While Driving

In severe alternator failure, the car may stall suddenly while driving. With no charging, the battery drains to the point where the fuel injectors, ignition system, and engine management computer can no longer function. This happens gradually — you'll usually see other warning signs first.


How to Test the Alternator at Home

The simplest test: with the engine running, measure voltage across the battery terminals with a multimeter. You should see 13.5–14.7V with the engine running. Below 13.5V with the engine running = alternator not charging adequately.
