The Subaru Forester has been one of the most practical compact SUVs on the road since 1998 — and also one of the most misunderstood when it comes to maintenance. The EJ25 engine powering first through third-generation Foresters (1998–2012) carries the same head gasket vulnerability found in the Outback. The FB20/FB25 engines introduced in 2014 are a fundamentally different design. Knowing which era you own determines everything about your maintenance plan.

Engine Generations at a Glance

EJ25 (1998–2012 Forester): 2.5L SOHC or DOHC boxer four. Timing belt driven. Head gasket failure — particularly external seepage — affects nearly all high-mileage examples. The SOHC phase II (2002–2011) is the most common in the field.

FB20 / FB25 (2014+): Subaru's second-generation 2.0L and 2.5L boxers. Timing chain driven. Revised cylinder head design that addresses the EJ's core gasket failure points.


Head Gasket: EJ25 Failure Modes

External failure: Oil or coolant seeping from the cylinder head seam — visible as brown or sooty residue on the block face. A head gasket reseal ($300–$500 in parts DIY, $1,000–$1,800 at a shop) is the correct fix.

Internal failure: The more serious scenario — combustion gases enter the cooling circuit or coolant enters the oil.

  • Milky oil on the dipstick
  • White smoke from exhaust under load
  • Overheating without a visible external leak
  • Bubbling at the coolant reservoir while the engine runs

If you see any of these signs, stop driving immediately. Internal gasket failure can destroy bearings and cylinder walls within miles.

Timing Belt vs. Timing Chain by Year

EJ25 SOHC (1998–2012): Timing belt — replace at 105,000 miles. When doing the timing belt, always do the water pump at the same time. The water pump is driven by the timing belt; if it fails after you've just replaced the belt, you're tearing the engine apart again. Water pump cost: $60–$120 in parts.

EJ25 DOHC (2004–2008 XT): Also timing belt — same 105,000-mile interval.

FB20/FB25 (2014+): Timing chain — no scheduled replacement.

CVT Fluid (Lineartronic — 2014+)

AWD Rear Differential

The Forester's AWD system uses a viscous coupling rear differential on automatic models. When fluid degrades, the coupling response slows and differential chatter on tight turns becomes noticeable.

Bottom Line

The Forester is an honest, capable SUV that responds well to attentive maintenance. On EJ25 models, watch for external head gasket leaks, keep oil changes short, use OAT coolant, and address any overheating immediately. On FB-generation Foresters, the biggest risk is skipping CVT fluid service. Change it at 30,000 miles and your Lineartronic CVT will last as long as the rest of the car.
