Subaru Outback DIY Maintenance Guide (EJ25, FB25, CVT, AWD)

The Subaru Outback is one of the most capable all-weather wagons ever built — but it also has a complicated maintenance history. The EJ25 engine that powered Outbacks from 1996–2011 carries a well-known head gasket reputation, while the FB25 that replaced it in 2012 is a cleaner, more reliable design. Understanding which engine you have — and what it needs — is the single most important thing an Outback owner can do.

Which Engine Do You Have?

EJ25 SOHC (1996–2011): The 2.5L boxer four-cylinder that built Subaru's reputation. Phase I (1996–1999) used single-layer MLS gaskets prone to external leaks; Phase II (2000–2011) improved the design but still fails — especially in the 2000–2009 range. The EJ25 is a timing belt engine with a 105,000-mile replacement interval.

FB25 (2012–present): Subaru's complete redesign of the 2.5L boxer. Timing chain instead of belt and significantly improved head gasket architecture. More reliable day-to-day, but CVT fluid service is non-negotiable.


EJ25 Head Gasket: What to Watch For

External failure (most common): Oil or coolant leaks at the cylinder head seam — brown or black residue on the outside of the engine near the firewall.

Internal failure (more serious): Combustion gases enter the coolant system, or coolant enters the oil. Signs include milky oil on the dipstick, white smoke from the exhaust under load, overheating without an obvious coolant leak, or bubbling in the coolant reservoir when the engine is running.

The most vulnerable years are 2000–2009. Budget $1,200–$2,200 for a shop head gasket job, or $400–$700 in parts for a DIY replacement.

CVT Fluid (Lineartronic CVT)

Subaru's Lineartronic CVT is standard on most Outbacks since 2010. Serviced correctly, it's highly reliable. Neglected, it fails catastrophically.

Fluid spec: Subaru CVTF-II (part #K0415-Y0710) or Idemitsu NS-2 CVT Fluid — do NOT use generic CVT fluid or any fluid not specifically listed as NS-2 compatible Capacity: 7.4 quarts total; 3.5–4.0 quarts for a drain-and-fill Service interval: Every 30,000 miles — Subaru's "lifetime" rating is one of the biggest maintenance myths in the industry Drain plug torque: 18 ft-lbs
