Is Your Engine Interference or Non-Interference?

This is the single most important question before you start.

Interference engine: Pistons and valves share the same space at different moments. If the timing belt breaks, they collide. Engines like Honda 4-cylinders (K-series, D-series), VW/Audi 4-cylinders, Subaru EJ series, and most diesel engines are interference designs.

Non-interference engine: Valves and pistons never share the same space. A broken belt means the engine stops — no internal damage. Many older Toyota 4-cylinders (22RE, 3S-FE) are non-interference.

Service Interval

Step-by-Step: Timing Belt Replacement

Step 1: Gather Engine-Specific Information

Before touching a bolt, find:

  • Your exact timing mark locations (factory service manual or marque-specific forum)
  • The required locking pin or alignment tool part number for your camshaft/crankshaft
  • Torque specifications for the harmonic balancer bolt, tensioner, and idler pulleys

Step 2: Position the Engine at TDC (Top Dead Center)

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (using the harmonic balancer bolt) until the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Verify by aligning:

  • The crankshaft timing mark to the mark on the oil pump or lower cover
  • Both camshaft sprocket marks to their respective marks on the upper cover or head

Step 3: Remove Accessory Drive Components

Depending on your engine, you may need to remove:

  • Serpentine belt and tensioner
  • Power steering pump (move aside without disconnecting lines)
  • A/C compressor (move aside)
  • Engine mount (use engine support bar to take weight)
  • Valve cover or upper timing cover

Step 4: Lock the Camshaft and Crankshaft

Install locking pins or alignment tools per factory spec. Do not skip this step. If the cams rotate while the belt is off, valves can contact pistons in interference engines, and you'll lose your timing position in any engine.

Step 5: Remove the Old Belt and Components

  • Remove the timing covers (upper, middle, lower)
  • Release tensioner tension (compress hydraulic tensioner or rotate spring tensioner away from belt)
  • Slide the old belt off the sprockets
  • Remove tensioner and idler pulleys — replace with new kit components
  • Replace water pump now while everything is accessible

Step 6: Verify Timing Marks One More Time

Before installing the new belt, double-check every timing mark. The crankshaft and both camshaft marks must be aligned to factory spec. This is not the step to rush.

Step 7: Install the New Belt

Route the belt per the factory diagram — crankshaft sprocket first, then tensioner side, then idler, then camshaft sprocket(s). Belt routing direction matters; most belts are directional.

Step 8: Set Belt Tension

  • For hydraulic tensioners: compress the tensioner, install the belt, then release the locking pin — the spring does the work
  • For manual tensioners: rotate to spec and torque the tensioner bolt

Step 9: Verify Rotation

Remove all locking tools. Hand-rotate the crankshaft two full clockwise revolutions. Recheck all timing marks. They must realign exactly. If they don't, the timing is off — remove the belt and start over.

Step 10: Torque the Harmonic Balancer

Crankshaft harmonic balancer bolts are typically 125–200 lb-ft and are often torque-to-yield (one-time-use). Check your spec — many require a new bolt.

Step 11: Reassemble

Reinstall covers, motor mount, and all accessory components. Refill the coolant if you replaced the water pump.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the locking tools: Without a cam lock, you risk valve-to-piston contact when removing the belt
  • Wrong belt routing: Refer to the factory diagram every time
  • Not replacing the tensioner: A worn tensioner can allow belt skip even with a new belt
  • Reusing a TTY harmonic balancer bolt: It will fail under torque
