Here's exactly how to rotate your own tires, which rotation pattern to use, and how to make sure the lug nuts are torqued correctly so nothing comes loose.

What You Need

Required tools:

  • Floor jack (2-ton minimum; 3-ton for trucks and SUVs)
  • Two pairs of jack stands (4 total)
  • Breaker bar or impact wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Correct lug socket for your vehicle (check your lug nut size — typically 17mm, 19mm, or 21mm)

Optional but useful:

  • Wheel chocks (blocks behind tires for safety)
  • Hydraulic jack pads (protects frame and rocker panels from jack damage)
  • Valve stem cap bag (keep track of your caps)

Before You Start

Check for a staggered fitment. Some performance vehicles run different tire sizes front vs. rear — for example, 245/45R18 fronts and 275/40R18 rears. Staggered fitment tires cannot be rotated in the traditional sense. If your front and rear tires are different sizes, skip to the section on alternative staggered approaches.

Check for directional tires. Directional tires have a V-shaped tread pattern designed to rotate in one direction. They can only be moved front-to-rear on the same side — not crossed to the opposite side. Look for an arrow on the sidewall indicating rotation direction. Directional tires will say "ROTATION →" on the sidewall.

Check your spare. If you have a full-size matching spare, it can be included in the rotation on a 5-tire rotation pattern, extending tire life further.


The Correct Rotation Patterns

Front-Wheel Drive

Move rear tires straight forward. Cross front tires to the rear.

  • LR → LF (left rear goes to left front)
  • RR → RF (right rear goes to right front)
  • LF → RR (left front crosses to right rear)
  • RF → LR (right front crosses to left rear)

The front tires do the work on FWD vehicles — they handle acceleration, steering, and a portion of braking. They wear significantly faster than rears. Crossing them to the rear on rotation maximizes the benefits of the X-pattern.

Rear-Wheel Drive

Move front tires straight back. Cross rear tires to the front.

  • LF → LR (left front goes to left rear)
  • RF → RR (right front goes to right rear)
  • LR → RF (left rear crosses to right front)
  • RR → LF (right rear crosses to left front)

All-Wheel Drive / Four-Wheel Drive

Use the X-pattern — all four tires cross diagonally.

  • LF → RR
  • RF → LR
  • LR → RF
  • RR → LF

AWD systems stress all four tires relatively evenly, but not identically. The X-pattern ensures every tire sees every position over multiple rotations.

Directional Tires (Same-Side Rotation Only)

  • LF → LR (front goes to rear, same side)
  • LR → LF (rear goes to front, same side)

No crossing. The tread direction must stay consistent with wheel rotation direction.

Staggered Fitment (Different Size Front/Rear)

If tires are non-directional, you can cross them side-to-side (left to right and right to left) but not front to rear. This maintains the size difference while rotating between sides. If tires are both directional and staggered, you cannot rotate them at all — they must wear out individually and be replaced per axle.


Step-by-Step Rotation Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

Park on a flat, level surface. Hard concrete is ideal — asphalt can compress under jack stand load. Engage the parking brake. Put the transmission in Park (automatic) or first gear (manual).

Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if you're lifting the front, or in front of the front wheels if you're lifting the rear.

Step 2: Break the Lug Nuts Loose

This is important: break the lug nuts loose before you lift the vehicle. Use your breaker bar or impact wrench while the tire is on the ground and can resist rotation. One half-turn counterclockwise is enough — don't remove them yet.

Breaking them while the vehicle is in the air risks spinning the wheel, which puts stress on the brake rotor and can damage the wheel bearing.

Step 3: Lift the Vehicle

Front of the vehicle: Locate the front jack point (typically the center of the front subframe — check your owner's manual). Position the floor jack under the jack point and raise the front end until both front wheels are off the ground.

Place jack stands under the designated front jack stand points (front frame rails or manufacturer-specified points — not the exhaust, plastic body panels, or brake lines). Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands. Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.

Rear of the vehicle: Repeat the process using the rear jack point (typically the rear subframe or differential housing on RWD). Place jack stands under rear frame points.

Important for EVs: Battery packs lower the floor on electric vehicles. Use a lift adapter or a wide jack pad to avoid contacting the battery enclosure. Check your EV's owner's manual for correct jack points.

Step 4: Remove and Move the Tires

With all four corners in the air, remove the tires completely. Place each tire next to where it's going (using your rotation pattern).

Inspect each tire's tread depth, sidewall condition, and look for embedded objects (nails, screws). This is your easy inspection window.

Move all four tires to their new positions.

Step 5: Install the Tires Hand-Tight

Thread lug nuts by hand until snug. Do not use a wrench yet — and never use an impact gun to tighten directly against the seat.

Step 6: Lower and Torque to Spec

Raise the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack, remove the stands, and lower the vehicle until tires make contact with the ground (but don't put full vehicle weight on the tires yet).

Use the torque wrench in a star pattern (opposite corners, not circular) to torque the lug nuts to the vehicle's specified torque. This spec is in the owner's manual — common specs are:

  • Small cars: 80–90 ft-lbs
  • Mid-size sedans/crossovers: 90–110 ft-lbs
  • Trucks and large SUVs: 120–140 ft-lbs

Why the star pattern? Circular torquing pulls the wheel disk off-center against the hub, which can cause brake vibration. The star pattern applies even pressure to seat the wheel uniformly against the hub.

Lower the vehicle fully and apply final torque.

Step 7: Check Tire Pressure

Tire rotation is the right time to check and adjust tire pressure. The correct pressure is on the door jamb sticker — not the maximum pressure stamped on the tire sidewall. Check cold (car hasn't been driven in 3+ hours or driven less than 1 mile).


Common Mistakes to Avoid

Torquing in a circle: Star pattern only. Circular torquing causes brake rotor runout and steering wheel vibration.

Using the wrong jack point: Jacking on the battery enclosure (EVs), plastic body trim, exhaust pipe, or unibody pinch welds can cause serious damage. Always check the owner's manual.

Forgetting the TPMS reset: Some vehicles require a TPMS reset procedure after rotation so the system knows which sensor is at which position. Usually this is a button in the vehicle settings, or a drive cycle at a specified speed.

Impact gun directly on lugs without check: Impact guns apply uneven torque. Always finish with a torque wrench. Undertorqued lug nuts can come loose; overtorqued lug nuts can stretch the studs or warp rotors.
