Step-by-Step: TPMS Sensor Replacement
Step 1: Identify the Failed Sensor
Use an OBD2 scanner with TPMS support or a TPMS trigger tool to read which sensor is failed. Many modern vehicles display per-tire pressure on the dash with a low reading or missing reading indicating the failed corner.
If you don't have a scanner, take the vehicle to any auto parts store — they'll read the codes for free.
Step 2: Buy the Correct Sensor
OEM sensors are vehicle-specific. Most aftermarket "programmable" sensors are multi-protocol and can be programmed to any vehicle — they cost $15–$25 and work as well as OEM.

Option B: TPMS relearn tool Use a TPMS activation tool to wake each sensor in sequence (usually driver front → passenger front → passenger rear → driver rear), then activate the relearn mode. The vehicle chirps or flashes the TPMS light to confirm it learned each sensor.
Option C: Pre-programmed sensor Some programmable sensors can be pre-programmed to your vehicle's sensor ID before installation. This requires a TPMS scan tool that reads the old sensor's ID and clones it to the new one — only useful if the old sensor still partially functions.
Option D: Dealer or shop reprogramming If you don't have a TPMS tool and auto-learn doesn't work, any tire shop or dealer can program it in 10 minutes. Usually $10–$20 for this service.
TPMS Sensor Valve Stem Maintenance
Every time a tire is unmounted and remounted, the service kit (grommet, washer, nut, cap) should be replaced. These parts cost $3–$5 per wheel. Reusing old hardware risks valve stem leaks. Most shops do this automatically.
