Step-by-Step: Drain and Fill Method

Note: Most automatic transmissions do not have a traditional dipstick — fluid level is checked via an overflow plug or requires the transmission to be at operating temperature. Verify your vehicle's procedure before starting.
Step 1: Warm the Transmission
Drive the car for 10–15 minutes to bring the transmission to operating temperature. Hot fluid drains more completely and you can measure the correct fill level accurately.
Step 2: Lift and Secure the Vehicle

Most transmission drain plugs have a small magnetic tip that collects metallic debris. Clean the magnet — some fine metal dust is normal. Heavy metallic flakes or chunks indicate internal wear and warrant inspection before you refill.
Step 6: Replace the Drain Plug
Install a new drain plug washer (usually aluminum or copper — do not reuse the old one). Torque the plug to specification. Most are in the 25–35 ft-lbs range — check your service manual.
Step 7: Fill with Correct ATF
Add fluid through the dipstick tube (if equipped) or the fill port on the transmission. Most drain-and-fill procedures require 3–4 quarts to restore proper level. On vehicles with overflow plugs, fill until fluid just begins to trickle out the overflow hole with the transmission at operating temperature.
