A wheel bearing failure sounds like a helicopter is following you down the highway. It's a low, grinding roar that gets louder with speed and changes when you swerve. Ignore it and you're risking a wheel that seizes or separates at speed. Don't ignore it.
The good news: on most modern vehicles, wheel bearing replacement is a bolt-on job. The hub assembly design that became standard after 2000 turned a shop-only job into afternoon garage work. But there are situations where you need to walk it to a shop — and knowing the difference saves you from being stranded halfway through a job.

The Highway Weave Test
Drive at 50–60 mph on an empty road. Gently swerve left and right. Listen for the grinding to get louder or quieter.
- Gets louder when you swerve left: Right wheel bearing is failing (weight loads the right bearing)
- Gets louder when you swerve right: Left wheel bearing is failing
This works because lateral weight transfer loads the outer bearing on each side. The bearing under load screams louder.
Wheel Play Test
With the vehicle on jack stands, grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and try to rock it in and out. More than about 1–2mm of play suggests a worn wheel bearing. (Grabbing at 9 and 3 o'clock tests for ball joint or bushing play — a different issue.)
Speed-Variable Noise
If the grinding noise follows vehicle speed, not engine speed — meaning it gets worse with vehicle speed and doesn't change with engine load — the wheel bearing is the primary suspect.
Noise that changes with throttle input (speeds up or slows down with engine revs, not road speed) is more likely to be a drivetrain bearing.
Visual Check
With the wheel removed, inspect the hub area for:
- Dark grease staining around the hub face (indicates a failed seal)
- Scoring or pitting on the hub surface
- Visibly damaged or corroded wheel flange
Two Types of Wheel Bearing Setups
Hub Assembly (Most Common — Post-2000 Vehicles)
The bearing is permanently assembled inside a hub unit, pre-sealed, and pre-packed with grease. The entire unit bolts onto the steering knuckle with 3–4 bolts.
This is the DIY-friendly design. The hub assembly costs $60–$150 for most vehicles. The job is: remove the old unit, bolt on the new unit, torque to spec. No press required.
Press-Fit Bearing (Older Vehicles and Some Rear Axles)
The bearing is a separate item pressed into the knuckle or axle housing. Replacement requires pressing the old bearing out and pressing the new one in with a hydraulic press — a $500–$3,000 piece of equipment.
This is where most home mechanics stop. Unless you have a press or can rent one at a shop, this type goes to a shop.
How to tell which you have: Look up your specific vehicle year/make/model. If the parts search returns a "wheel hub assembly," you have the bolt-on type. If it returns a "wheel bearing" as a separate item, you likely have a press-fit setup.
Tools Required (Hub Assembly Replacement)
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Breaker bar or impact wrench
- Socket set — standard and metric
- Torque wrench
- Hammer and punch (sometimes needed to persuade a stuck hub)
- Penetrating oil
- Wire brush
For vehicles with a center axle nut (front hubs with CV axle):
- 30mm–36mm axle nut socket
- Breaker bar rated for 200+ ft-lbs
- The nut is large and extremely tight — an impact wrench makes this easier
Step-by-Step: Hub Assembly Replacement (Front Wheel Drive)
Step 1: Break the Axle Nut Loose First
Do this before jacking the car. The axle nut on front hubs needs 150–225 ft-lbs of torque to break loose. With the wheel on the ground and someone pressing the brake pedal, put your longest breaker bar on the axle nut and break it loose. Don't remove it yet — just crack the torque.
This is safer and easier with the tire loaded on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support
Jack up the vehicle, support on stands, remove the wheel.
Step 3: Disconnect the Brake Caliper and Rotor
Unbolt the brake caliper (usually two sliding pin bolts) and hang it from the spring with a wire hook — don't let it hang by the brake hose. Slide the rotor off the hub.
Step 4: Disconnect the Wheel Speed Sensor
The ABS wheel speed sensor reads a tone ring on the hub. It's held by a single bolt. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the sensor. Don't damage this — replacement is $30–$80.
Step 5: Remove the Hub Bolts
The hub assembly is bolted to the steering knuckle from behind — 3 or 4 bolts. Some are accessible directly; others require working around the knuckle from behind.
Apply penetrating oil. These bolts often seize, especially on vehicles in rust-belt states.
Step 6: Remove the CV Axle from the Hub
With the axle nut loose, you can usually slide the CV axle out of the hub center by pushing it toward the transaxle. Sometimes it needs a few gentle taps with a rubber mallet.
Don't yank or bend the CV axle. Support it so it hangs loose but doesn't damage the inner joint.
Step 7: Remove the Hub Assembly
Slide the hub forward and out of the knuckle. If it's stuck, spray more penetrating oil behind it and use a rubber mallet to tap it free. Don't hammer directly on the hub face.
Step 8: Install the New Hub Assembly
Slide the new hub into the knuckle. Thread all hub bolts by hand, then torque in a star pattern to specification (typically 60–85 ft-lbs on most passenger vehicles — check yours).
Thread the CV axle into the hub center.
Step 9: Reassemble in Reverse Order
- Reinstall ABS sensor (don't overtighten — 7–10 ft-lbs typical)
- Reinstall rotor
- Reinstall caliper and brake hardware
- Thread new axle nut (or reuse if not damaged — many manufacturers recommend a new nut)
Step 10: Torque the Axle Nut
Lower the vehicle so the wheel is on the ground. Apply the brake. Torque the axle nut to specification — typically 150–225 ft-lbs depending on vehicle. This is a critical spec. Under-torquing allows the hub to move on the axle; over-torquing damages the bearing.
Stake or stake-lock the nut if required by your vehicle.
When to Walk Away and Go to a Shop
Walk away if:
- Your vehicle has a press-fit bearing (not a hub assembly)
- Hub bolts are seized into the knuckle and won't move with penetrating oil and a breaker bar
- The steering knuckle is damaged
- You don't have a way to properly torque the axle nut (200+ ft-lbs requires a serious breaker bar or impact wrench)
- The CV axle is seized in the hub and won't slide out
A partial disassembly with frozen parts is worse than not starting — you now have a car that can't be driven and needs a shop to finish. Know your limits before you start.
