How to Store Your Car for Winter (Complete Checklist)

If you're putting a car away for the winter — a classic, a convertible, a track car, or just a vehicle you won't drive for months — a proper storage process is the difference between a car that wakes up ready to drive and one that needs an expensive visit to the shop before it leaves the garage.

Many storage problems are completely preventable. This guide covers every step, in order, with notes on what gets skipped most often and why it matters.

1. Change the Oil Before Storage (Not After)

This is the most common storage advice people get wrong. The temptation is to change oil in spring "after it's been sitting." But used motor oil contains combustion byproducts, acidic compounds, and moisture that continue to corrode engine internals during storage. Fresh oil is a much better medium to store in.

Do it: Change the oil and filter within a week of your last drive before storage.


2. Fill the Tank and Add Fuel Stabilizer

A full tank minimizes the air space above the fuel where condensation forms, which introduces water into the fuel system. This prevents the minor rust that develops inside a steel fuel tank with a half-empty, air-exposed interior.

More importantly: add fuel stabilizer.

Modern gasoline (especially ethanol-blended E10) begins to degrade within 30–60 days. Ethanol absorbs water and can separate from the gasoline, leaving a gummy varnish residue in carburetors, fuel injectors, and fuel lines.

What to use: STA-BIL Storage Formula is the most widely available option. Treat the tank per the bottle instructions (typically 1 oz per 2.5 gallons), then run the car for 5–10 minutes to let treated fuel circulate through the entire fuel system before shutting down for storage.


3. Attach a Battery Tender (Smart Charger)

A car battery sitting disconnected for 3–6 months will self-discharge to the point of sulfation — a permanent reduction in capacity. A completely discharged battery in cold temperatures can freeze.

The solution: A Battery Tender Plus or NOCO GENIUS2 smart charger maintains the battery at full charge without overcharging. Plug it into a standard 120V outlet and connect the included alligator clips or ring terminals to the battery.

If you don't have an outlet in the garage, disconnect the negative battery cable instead — this significantly slows self-discharge.


4. Address Tire Flat-Spotting

Tires sitting under a stationary load develop flat spots — subtle deformations at the contact patch that cause vibration when you drive again. This is usually temporary and disappears after a few miles of driving; but in cold storage, flat spots can become semi-permanent, especially in sub-freezing temperatures.

Prevention strategies:

  • Inflate tires to maximum sidewall pressure (not the door placard spec — the max spec on the tire sidewall). The higher pressure slows deformation.
  • Use tire cradles (foam blocks that support the tire in a slightly curved position, distributing load away from a single contact patch). These are $40–80 per set and are the gold standard for long-term storage.
  • Jack the car up on all four jack stands, taking weight off the tires completely. Ideal for storage over 3 months, though it requires stable jack stands and a level floor.

5. Protect Against Rodents

A garage is a warm, protected space — exactly what mice and other rodents are looking for in winter. They nest inside cars (under hoods, inside air boxes, inside cabin HVAC systems) and chew wiring, insulation, and hoses.

Prevention:

  • Steel wool in exhaust outlets and air intakes. Stuff it in loosely before storage, remove before starting.
  • Peppermint oil on rags placed inside the cabin and under the hood. Rodents avoid the scent. Replace monthly if storing for a long period.
  • Rodent repellent pouches (available at Amazon and auto parts stores) are more convenient than loose peppermint oil.
  • Dryer sheets are sometimes recommended but are less effective than dedicated repellents.
  • Mouse traps around the perimeter of the storage area are a good supplement to prevention — especially if you've had rodent issues before.

6. Wash and Wax the Exterior

Storing a dirty car traps road salt, bird droppings, and tree sap against the paint and accelerates corrosion and paint damage. Wash thoroughly, clay bar if needed, and apply a coat of paste wax.

For convertibles: clean and treat the fabric or vinyl top with a conditioner appropriate to the material. Dry, cracked convertible tops can develop leak points over winter.


7. Protect the Interior

  • Vacuum the carpets and seats thoroughly
  • Apply a UV protectant to the dashboard if the storage space gets any light
  • Place a container of desiccant (silica gel) in the cabin to absorb moisture — this prevents mold and mildew smell on reopening

8. Brake Considerations

Leave the car in gear (manual) or in park (automatic) — do NOT set the parking brake for long-term storage. Parking brakes applied for months can seize in the engaged position, requiring significant effort or professional service to release. Use wheel chocks instead.


Complete Pre-Storage Checklist

  • Oil and filter changed with fresh oil
  • Fuel tank filled and stabilizer added, engine run for 10 minutes
  • Battery tender connected or battery disconnected
  • Tires inflated to max spec (or on cradles or jack stands)
  • Exhaust outlets and air intakes stuffed with steel wool
  • Rodent repellent placed inside cabin and under hood
  • Car washed, waxed, and dried
  • Interior cleaned and desiccant placed
  • Parking brake NOT set — wheel chocks used instead
  • Car cover on (breathable only — not plastic, which traps moisture)

Spring Wake-Up Procedure

  • Remove all stuffed steel wool before starting
  • Check tire pressures and inflate to door placard spec
  • Inspect under hood for any sign of rodent activity
  • Check oil level and condition on dipstick
  • Start the car and let it fully warm up before driving
