2017 Nissan Rogue Oil Change — QR25DE Engine

The 2017 Nissan Rogue is one of the easier oil changes in the compact SUV segment. The QR25DE 2.5L four-cylinder sits in a conventional position with good access to both the drain plug and filter. The main thing to get right is the oil capacity — the QR25DE takes exactly 4.9 quarts with a filter change, and the Rogue shares its platform with several other Nissan models that take different amounts. Don't eyeball it.

Engine Confirmation

All 2017 Nissan Rogue trims use the QR25DE 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder, producing 170 hp. There is no engine option variation for 2017 — one engine, one oil change procedure.

The 2017 Rogue Sport (which is a different, smaller vehicle — the Qashqai) uses a different engine and is not covered here.

Oil spec note: Nissan recommends 5W-30 for the QR25DE. While 0W-20 has become standard for many newer Nissans, the QR25DE was designed around 5W-30 and the spec should be followed. Nissan-branded Ester oil or Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W-30 are both solid choices.

Where to Find the Drain Plug and Filter

On the 2017 Rogue:

• Drain plug: Passenger-rear side of the oil pan, 14mm hex. The pan faces rearward, so the drain plug is easily accessible from below the engine bay.
• Oil filter: Driver's side of the engine block, mounted horizontally. It's accessible from above on some Rogue owners' setups and from below on others — the horizontal cap-style wrench works best.

A note on the undertray: The 2017 Rogue has a plastic aero panel under the engine. It's held by 6 Phillips screws and 2 pop-clips. You can access the drain plug through a removable access panel in the undertray without removing the whole piece — check if your Rogue has this access panel before deciding whether to remove the full tray.

Step-by-Step

Warm and Drain

1. Run the engine for 3–4 minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil drains faster and suspends more wear particles.

2. Park on level ground. Apply the parking brake.

3. If your Rogue doesn't have an undertray access panel, remove the undertray (6 Phillips screws, 2 pop-clips). If it has the panel, open just the panel.

4. Position your drain pan under the engine's passenger-rear area.

5. Use the 14mm socket to break the drain plug loose. Remove it by hand for the last few turns — have the pan ready and pull the plug away quickly as oil starts flowing.

6. Let it drain 4–5 minutes.

Replace the Filter

7. While the oil drains, use your cap-style filter wrench to break the filter loose. Spin it off by hand. The filter is full of oil — tip it nose-down slowly to avoid spilling.

8. Wipe the filter seating surface clean. Lightly coat the new filter's O-ring with fresh 5W-30.

9. Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mount, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use a wrench — hand-tight plus 3/4 turn is the spec for the QR25DE spin-on filter.

Reinstall and Fill

10. Clean the drain plug. Inspect the sealing washer — the 2017 Rogue uses a copper crush washer. Replace it if it shows deformation. Reinstall and torque to 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).

11. Reinstall the undertray or close the access panel.

12. Lower the vehicle. Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine (driver's side valve cover, marked with an oil can symbol).

13. Pour in 4.5 quarts of 5W-30, then check the dipstick. The QR25DE dipstick is on the driver's side of the engine — pull, wipe, reinsert, pull again.

14. Add oil incrementally until the level reaches the upper "Full" mark. Total fill is 4.9 quarts — add the remaining oil slowly to avoid overshooting.

15. Reinstall the fill cap. Start the engine and watch the oil pressure light. It should extinguish within 3–5 seconds.

16. Let it idle for 90 seconds, then shut down. Wait 3 minutes and recheck the dipstick.

Reset the Oil Life Monitor

17. Turn the ignition to the "On" position (not Start). Press the Trip button on the instrument cluster until "Oil Life" displays.

18. Hold the Trip button for 10 seconds until the display resets to 100% (or shows "Oil Change Required" disappearing). The exact reset method varies by trim — consult your owner's manual if this doesn't work.

19. Alternatively: key on, depress the accelerator fully three times within 5 seconds, then turn key off.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the wrong capacity. 4.9 quarts. Not 5.0, not 4.5. Overfilling the QR25DE causes oil aeration and can blow the rear main seal. Under-filling by even 0.5 quarts runs the engine thin under hard acceleration.

2. Using 0W-20 from habit. Many modern Nissans use 0W-20, but the QR25DE in the 2017 Rogue specifies 5W-30. Check your oil cap — it should say 5W-30.

3. Over-tightening the filter. Hand-tight plus 3/4 turn is the filter spec. Using a filter wrench to tighten is a surefire way to crush the O-ring and cause a slow leak.

4. Ignoring the CVT fluid. The 2017 Rogue uses Nissan's Xtronic CVT, which has its own fluid change interval (60,000–100,000 miles depending on use).
