Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Warm the drivetrain — Drive 10–15 minutes before servicing to bring the differential fluid to operating temperature.
2. Raise and support the Highlander — Jack from the frame, place jack stands at all four corners for safe access to both differentials.
3. Fill plug first — ALWAYS — Before draining either differential, confirm the fill plug can be removed. The fill plug is higher on the differential housing than the drain plug. 7. Reinstall the front drain plug — Torque to 29 ft-lbs.
8. Fill the front differential — Pump ATF WS in through the fill hole until it flows from the opening. Install the fill plug and torque to 29 ft-lbs.
9. Lower the vehicle and check for leaks — Inspect both drain and fill plug areas after driving 10 minutes.

What About the Transfer Case?

The 2017 Highlander AWD also has a transfer case (the unit that splits power between front and rear axles). Transfer case fluid is separate from the differential fluid. Transfer case capacity is approximately 1.2 quarts and also uses Toyota ATF WS. The drain/fill procedure is identical to the differentials. If you're doing a full drivetrain fluid service, do the transfer case at the same time.

Troubleshooting

AWD system warning light after fluid change: If you disturbed a speed sensor connector or ABS sensor during the fluid change, an AWD warning may appear. Check all connectors in the area where you were working.
