- 3/8" and 1/2" drive ratchet

Before You Start on Your 2018 Sierra
The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500's front brakes are large — this is a truck rated to tow 12,000+ lbs in some configurations, and the front brakes handle the majority of stopping force. Get the right pad compound. If you tow or carry heavy loads, consider a medium-duty pad like the Power Stop Z36 Truck & Tow. For normal commuting and light duty, standard OEM pads are fine.
Check the rotors while you're in there. At 0.030" below minimum thickness, rotors must be replaced alongside pads. Measure with a micrometer or have the parts store check them.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Loosen the lug nuts before jacking — Break them loose (21mm, counterclockwise) while the wheel is on the ground. This prevents the rotor from spinning when you apply force.
- Jack and support the truck — Position the floor jack under the front differential or frame rail. Raise, place jack stands, lower onto the stands.
- Remove the front wheels — Remove lug nuts and pull the wheel off. Set it aside flat (don't stack things on it).
- Inspect before disassembly — Before touching anything, look at the caliper for brake fluid leaks around the piston seal. Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, heat cracks, or uneven wear. Replace rotors if grooves exceed ~0.040" depth or if the rotor is at minimum thickness.
- Remove the caliper slide pin bolts — Two 15mm bolts on the back of the caliper. Remove both. The caliper slides off the carrier. Support the caliper with a wire hook or set it on the suspension — never let it hang by the brake hose.
- Remove the old brake pads — The pads clip into the caliper carrier. Pull them out. Note the orientation and any shims/hardware.
- Compress the caliper piston — Use a C-clamp with the old pad as a backing plate to slowly compress the piston back into the caliper body. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap first to allow fluid displacement. Go slowly — forcing a piston too fast can tear the boot.
- Clean the caliper carrier — Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to remove rust and debris from the pad contact rails. This is critical — a dirty carrier prevents pads from sliding freely and causes uneven wear or pulling.
- Apply caliper grease to slide pins — Remove the slide pins, clean them, and apply a thin coat of high-temp caliper grease. Stiff slide pins cause uneven pad wear and brake drag.
- Install new pads — Install hardware clips if your pads came with new hardware (always use it). Clip pads into the carrier — inner and outer pads are typically different; check orientation.
- Reinstall the caliper — Slide the caliper over the pads and carrier. Install the slide pin bolts. Torque to 80 ft-lbs (108 Nm) for the carrier bolts (18mm). Slide pin bolts torque to 25 ft-lbs (34 Nm).
- Reinstall wheels — Hand-tighten lug nuts, lower the truck, then torque lug nuts to 140 ft-lbs in a star pattern.
- Pump the brake pedal — With the hood open and reservoir visible, pump the brake pedal 15–20 times until it feels firm. This extends the pistons back against the new pads. Check fluid level — top up with DOT 3 if needed.
- Bed the pads — New pads need a break-in procedure: 10 light stops from 30 mph, then 5 moderate stops from 40 mph, with cool-down between sets. This transfers a thin, even layer of pad material onto the rotor for proper bite.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Letting the caliper hang by the brake hose — Brake hoses are rubber and can develop microcracks from weight. Support the caliper.
- Skipping the slide pin service — Seized slide pins are the #1 cause of one-sided brake wear and pulling. Clean and grease them every pad change.
- Not pumping the pedal before driving — A single pump of the pedal when the pistons are retracted means zero stopping power. Pump until the pedal is firm before you move the truck.
