2018 Toyota Tacoma Transmission Fluid Change — 6-Speed Auto, WS Fluid, 4WD

I do the transmission fluid on my 2018 Tacoma every 30,000 miles. Toyota doesn't list it as a scheduled item on the maintenance chart — they call it "lifetime" fluid. That's marketing. The fluid in a hard-working truck that hauls, tows, or climbs off-road breaks down. Pull it after 60,000 miles and it'll be dark brown instead of the original pink-red color. Here's exactly how I do it.

Which Transmission Does the 2018 Tacoma Have?

Get the DIY Mechanic System

The 2018 Tacoma came with two transmission options:

  • A750F — 5-speed automatic paired with the 2.7L 4-cylinder (2TR-FE) in 2WD
  • AB60F — 6-speed automatic paired with the 3.5L V6 (2GR-FKS) in both 2WD and 4WD
  • Manual — 6-speed manual (C60) available with the 2.7L 2WD

This guide covers the AB60F 6-speed automatic, which is the most common configuration (3.5L V6 is standard on most Tacoma trims). The A750F 4-cylinder drain/fill procedure is similar.

Important: Toyota ATF WS is a low-viscosity, friction-modified automatic transmission fluid. Do not substitute Dexron VI, Mercon V, or generic ATF. Toyota has approved Aisin ATF-WS as an equivalent (same manufacturer, different label). The Valvoline MaxLife works but stick to Toyota WS or Aisin WS if your truck is under warranty or near 100k miles.

Tools & Parts Needed

  • Toyota ATF WS fluid (4 qt minimum for drain/fill)
  • 10mm hex socket (for drain plug and fill plug — same size)
  • Torque wrench (30+ ft-lb capacity)
  • Large drain pan (4+ qt)
  • Fluid hand pump or transfer pump with tubing (fill is difficult without one)
  • Floor jack + stands or ramps
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop rags

Drain and Fill Procedure (No Pan Drop)

The drain/fill method replaces approximately 3–3.5 quarts per cycle. This is enough to freshen the fluid and is the standard maintenance approach. A full flush requires multiple drain/fill cycles or a transmission flush machine.

1. Warm the Transmission

Drive 5–10 minutes to warm the fluid. Warm ATF flows out faster and more completely than cold fluid. Park on level ground.

2. Lift and Secure

Raise the front of the vehicle and secure on jack stands. The Tacoma has good ground clearance, but you need access to the bottom of the transmission pan.

3. Locate Drain and Fill Plugs

The AB60F has both a drain plug and a fill plug on the transmission pan. Both are 10mm hex (Allen) heads. This is different from many transmissions that only have a fill hole — you won't need to drop the pan for a standard service.

  • Drain plug: Center-bottom of the transmission pan
  • Fill plug: Side of the transmission housing, driver's side, approximately 3–4 inches up from the pan

Loosen the fill plug first. If the fill plug is seized and you can't get it out, you do not want to drain the transmission dry. Confirm the fill plug breaks loose before removing the drain plug.

4. Drain the Old Fluid

With fill plug loosened, remove the drain plug with your 10mm hex socket. Let it drain fully — 5–10 minutes. Note the fluid color: healthy WS fluid is pink-red and clear. Dark brown or burnt-smelling fluid means service was overdue.

Reinstall drain plug. Torque to 27 ft-lb (36 Nm).

5. Add New Fluid

Remove the fill plug fully. Insert your pump tubing into the fill hole. Pump in 3.2 quarts of Toyota ATF WS. The transmission fill is difficult to do without a fluid pump — the fill hole angles upward and gravity doesn't work.

Reinstall fill plug. Torque to 30 ft-lb (41 Nm).

6. Check for Leaks

Lower the vehicle. Start the engine and let it idle. Move the shifter through all positions (P-R-N-D-2-1 or P-R-N-D-4-3-2-L). Return to Park. Check under the vehicle for drips from the drain plug. Let it run 2–3 minutes.

7. Check Fluid Level

The AB60F uses a fill-to-overflow method for correct level. The fluid level is correct when it's at the fill plug hole thread level. If fluid trickles out when you remove the fill plug (engine running, fluid warm), the level is good. If it doesn't, add more.

Check fluid level with engine running and fluid at operating temperature — this is Toyota's spec. Checking cold or with engine off gives an inaccurate reading.

4WD Transfer Case Note

If your Tacoma is 4WD, you have a transfer case that also contains gear oil. This is separate from transmission fluid. The transfer case uses Toyota LF (Low Friction) gear oil or equivalent 75W-90 GL-4. Service interval: every 30,000 miles if you use 4WD regularly, or every 60,000 miles light use. Transfer case drain plug is on the bottom of the transfer case, fill plug on the side — same concept as the transmission.

Don't skip the transfer case while you're under there.

Common Mistakes

1. Using Dexron VI instead of Toyota WS. This is the most common mistake on Tacoma transmission services. Dexron VI is NOT equivalent to Toyota ATF WS. WS is a lower viscosity fluid with specific friction modifiers for Toyota's clutch packs. Using Dexron VI can cause shuddering on light throttle and rough 1-2 upshifts. Use Toyota WS or Aisin WS.

2. Not loosening the fill plug before draining. The fill plug on the AB60F can corrode tight. If you drain first and then can't get the fill plug out, you've got a dry transmission and a problem. Always break the fill plug loose first — confirm it moves before you drain.

3. Checking fluid level with the engine off. Toyota specifies checking WS fluid with the engine running and fluid at operating temperature. The fluid level appears lower when cold or with engine off. Adding fluid to an already-correct cold level will overfill the transmission when it warms up, causing seal pressure issues.

4. Overfilling. ATF WS expands significantly when hot. Add 3 quarts, check level at operating temperature, then add incrementally. Overfilling a transmission is worse than underfilling — excess fluid gets aerated by the planetary gear sets and causes the same symptoms as a failing transmission.
