Before You Start

- Fill the front diff — Using the hand pump or gear oil pump, pump gear oil in through the fill hole until fluid is level with the bottom of the fill hole opening (standard fill method). Install the fill plug and torque to 29 ft-lbs.
- Move to the rear differential — The rear diff is the axle housing at the rear. Same process — drain plug at the bottom, fill plug on the side.
- Drain the rear diff — Remove the drain plug and drain into your pan. Rear diff capacity is approximately 2.0–2.2 quarts.
- Install the rear drain plug — Torque to 36 ft-lbs (49 Nm) — note the rear drain plug spec is higher than the front.
- Fill the rear differential — Pump fluid in until level with the fill hole opening. This takes approximately 2.0–2.2 quarts. Install the fill plug and torque to 36 ft-lbs.
- Check for leaks — With both diffs filled and plugged, lower the truck and check each fill and drain plug area for any seeping.
- Drive and recheck — Take a 10-minute drive, including a few turns at low speed (to circulate front diff fluid). Recheck for leaks.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Draining before confirming the fill plug moves — If the fill plug is rusted and seized, you can't refill after draining. Always loosen the fill plug first.
- Wrong fluid for LSD-equipped Tacoma — Standard 75W-90 GL-5 in an LSD causes clutch wear. LSD Tacomas need Toyota Gear Oil LT (limited-slip additive included). The fluid bottles are different — verify before purchasing.
- Under-filling — Gear oil level should reach the bottom edge of the fill hole. Under-filled differentials run hot and wear bearings faster.
- Not changing both diffs at the same time — If you're already under the truck, do both at once. The extra cost is $10–$15 in fluid and 15 minutes of labor.
Troubleshooting
Fill plug won't budge: Apply penetrating oil (PB Blaster) and let it soak for 15–30 minutes. Use a 3/4" drive impact gun if available — the 10mm hex plug is stout enough to handle impact on most Tacomas. If it rounds out, use a hex extractor kit.
Rear differential chattering or clunking on tight turns (LSD models): This is the classic symptom of wrong fluid or degraded LSD additive. Drain the rear diff fluid completely and refill with Toyota Gear Oil LT. Two fluid changes 500 miles apart often resolve the chatter on worn LSD differentials.
Gear oil coming out of differential vent after fill: You've overfilled. Loosen the fill plug slightly over a drain pan and let excess drain until it stops dripping, then reinstall.
