In an automatic transmission, gear changes are controlled by hydraulic clutch packs — sets of friction plates that engage and disengage to select gear ratios. When these clutch packs engage properly, power transfers smoothly from the engine to the wheels.
"Slipping" happens when the clutch packs don't hold fully. The engine revs spike because the transmission isn't transferring full power to the drivetrain — the engine load drops momentarily. This can be intermittent at first and progressively worsen.

The majority of transmission slipping cases that aren't due to major internal wear come down to fluid. Transmission fluid does three things: it lubricates the internal components, it serves as the hydraulic medium for clutch engagement, and it cools the transmission.
Low fluid level: Not enough fluid means the hydraulic pressure needed to fully engage the clutch packs drops. This leads to slipping, especially under load.
Degraded fluid: Old, burnt transmission fluid loses its viscosity and friction modifier properties. The clutch packs rely on the fluid's friction characteristics to engage correctly. Fluid that's been in service too long fails to provide this.

Common Causes of Transmission Slipping
1. Low or dirty transmission fluid As above — the most common cause and the first to check. Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell needs immediate service.
2. Worn clutch packs (internal wear) Over time, the friction material on the clutch plates wears down. When worn too thin, they slip under load. This is internal wear that requires transmission service or rebuild — but often develops gradually, giving time to address it before a complete failure.
3. Faulty solenoids Automatic transmissions use electronically controlled solenoids to direct hydraulic fluid and control shift timing. A failing solenoid can cause erratic shifts, delayed engagement, or slipping. Often throws a transmission-related fault code — scan for codes with an OBD-II scanner.
4. Worn or broken transmission bands Transmission bands are friction bands that wrap around components of the transmission to hold them stationary during certain gear changes. On some transmissions, these are adjustable and can be tightened when they wear. On others, they must be replaced.
5. Torque converter issues The torque converter is the fluid coupling between the engine and transmission. A worn or failing torque converter can cause shudder, slipping during acceleration, and poor power transfer. Torque converter shudder typically feels like driving over rumble strips at light throttle at highway speed.
6. Failed transmission pump The pump maintains hydraulic pressure throughout the transmission. A failing pump causes low pressure, which leads to slipping across all gears.
Scanning for Fault Codes
Before assuming the worst, plug in an OBD-II scanner and check for transmission fault codes (P07xx and P08xx codes are transmission-related). Common codes like P0730 (incorrect gear ratio), P0750–P0770 (shift solenoid faults), or P0218 (transmission overtemp) give you a starting direction for diagnosis.

What to Do
- Check fluid level and condition immediately. If low, top off with the correct fluid type and see if slipping improves. If dark/burnt, a fluid service is needed.
- Scan for fault codes to check for solenoid or sensor issues.
- Note the pattern: Does it slip in all gears? Only on upshifts? Only under heavy load? This information is valuable for diagnosis.
