Many vehicles built after 2010 — and some earlier — use what manufacturers call a "lifetime fill" or sealed automatic transmission. These transmissions have no dipstick and are designed to be serviced only at the dealer using specialized tools to measure fluid level at a specific temperature.
How to find out: Check your owner's manual in the fluid specifications section. If it lists "transmission dipstick," you're in luck. If it says "sealed" or "lifetime fill," fluid level checks require dealer service equipment. You can still check the fluid condition via the drain plug if you're comfortable doing a fluid service.

How to Check Transmission Fluid Step by Step
Unlike engine oil, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is checked with the engine running and at operating temperature. This is because the fluid expands when hot and needs to be circulating through the system for an accurate reading.
What you need:
- Clean white rag or lint-free cloth
- Funnel (if adding fluid)
- Correct ATF fluid for your vehicle (if needed)
Steps:
1. Warm up the transmission. Drive for 5–10 minutes in normal conditions. You need the fluid at operating temperature — not just engine temp. Alternatively, shift through all gear positions (P, R, N, D, and each numbered gear if present) while stopped, holding in each for a few seconds.
2. Park on level ground with the engine running. Put the transmission in Park. Leave the engine idling.
3. Locate the transmission dipstick. This is separate from the engine oil dipstick. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, it's usually toward the back of the engine bay near the firewall. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, it may be on the side of the transaxle.
4. Pull, wipe, reinsert, and read. Remove the dipstick completely and wipe it clean with your rag. Reinsert it fully — make sure it seats all the way in. Remove it again and read the fluid level.
5. Read the correct range. Most dipsticks have two sets of marks: one for COLD and one for HOT. Since you've warmed the fluid, use the HOT range. The level should be between MIN and MAX (or ADD and FULL) on the hot scale.
What Color Should Transmission Fluid Be?
This is where you get valuable diagnostic information — even if the level is fine.
Bright red / cherry red: New ATF looks like this. Normal for recent service or relatively fresh fluid.
Pinkish-red to light brown: Normal for used fluid that's been in service for a while. The fluid is still doing its job, but replacement is coming due.
Dark brown: The fluid is getting old and the additives are breaking down. Schedule a fluid service soon. Continued use will cause wear on internal components.
Black with a burnt smell: The fluid is severely degraded and overheated. This indicates the transmission has been running hot, possibly due to a failing cooler, heavy towing, or low fluid. Change the fluid immediately and have the transmission inspected.
Milky, pink-foamy, or bubbly: Water contamination, usually from a failed transmission cooler (internal radiator cooler leaking coolant into the transmission). This is a serious problem that requires immediate attention.
How to Add Fluid If It's Low
If the level is below the ADD/MIN mark on the hot scale, you need to add fluid. Use the exact ATF type specified by your manufacturer — this is in your owner's manual. Common types include Dexron VI, Mercon V, Honda ATF-DW1, Toyota WS, and others. These are NOT interchangeable — using the wrong fluid can damage clutch material and shift solenoids.
Use a funnel and add fluid in small increments (a quarter to half quart at a time), re-checking the level each time. It's easy to overfill, which causes aeration and fluid foaming.
When to Change Transmission Fluid
- Most manufacturers: 30,000–60,000 miles for severe duty (towing, stop-and-go), 60,000–100,000 miles for normal driving
- Sealed "lifetime fill" transmissions: 60,000–150,000 miles depending on manufacturer — "lifetime" is a marketing term, not a maintenance interval
- Any time the fluid looks dark brown to black
- Any time the fluid smells burnt
