2019 Kia Sportage Wheel Bearing Replacement Guide — Step-by-Step

A bad wheel bearing on the 2019 Kia Sportage presents as a humming or growling noise that changes pitch or tone as you turn the steering wheel — louder when you turn one direction, quieter the other. At highway speeds, it can sound like a tire defect or uneven wear, which is why it often gets misdiagnosed.

The good news for DIY mechanics: the 2019 Sportage uses a bolt-on hub assembly on all four corners — the bearing is integrated into the hub and replaced as a single unit. No hydraulic press required. If you can change a brake rotor, you can replace a hub assembly on this car.

Diagnosis First: Which Bearing?

  1. Find a safe, empty road.
  2. At 50–60 mph, gently steer left (weight shifts to the right wheels) — if the noise gets louder, the right bearing is likely failing.
  3. Gently steer right — if the noise gets louder, the left bearing is likely failing.

Parts Needed

Front hub assembly (AWD):

  • OEM Kia: 51750-D9500 (left), 51750-D9510 (right)
  • Aftermarket: Moog 512567 (left), Moog 512568 (right) — preferred for quality and fitment
  • Timken HA590424 is another reliable fit

Hardware:

  • New front axle nut (one-time-use self-locking — do NOT reuse the old nut)
  • Spec: M22×1.5 — bring the old one to the parts store to match

Tools

  • 32mm axle nut socket (verify your Sportage — typically 32mm for this generation)
  • Torque wrench capable of 148 ft-lbs
  • 17mm and 19mm sockets (caliper and bracket bolts)
  • 18mm socket (hub mounting bolts)
  • Breaker bar or impact gun (axle nut is very tight)
  • Dead-blow hammer or brass punch
  • Jack + jackstands, pry bar

Step-by-Step: Front Hub Assembly Replacement (AWD)

Step 1: Loosen Axle Nut Before Lifting

  1. Crack the axle nut loose while the wheel is on the ground — the weight prevents the rotor from spinning. Use an impact gun or breaker bar.
  2. Loosen only — don't remove yet.

Step 2: Lift and Secure 3. Break the lug nuts loose with the wheel on the ground. 4. Lift the front of the car and support on jackstands. 5. Remove the wheel.

Step 3: Remove Axle Nut 6. Remove the axle nut completely — discard it. You need a new one — these are prevailing-torque nuts that lose their retention once removed.

Step 4: Remove Caliper and Rotor 7. Remove the caliper (17mm caliper pin bolts, 26 ft-lbs to install) — hang it from the spring. 8. Remove the caliper bracket (19mm bolts, 65 ft-lbs to install) — set aside. 9. Remove the rotor.

Step 5: Disconnect Wheel Speed Sensor 10. Locate the ABS wheel speed sensor connector on the back of the knuckle. Press the release tab and unplug. 11. Remove the sensor wire bracket mounting bolt if applicable.

Step 6: Remove Hub Assembly 12. Locate the four hub mounting bolts on the back of the steering knuckle — 18mm. 13. Push the axle shaft inward as you work the hub off. The axle shaft passes through the center of the hub and doesn't need to be removed from the axle. 14. Remove all four 18mm bolts. 15. Pull the hub assembly off — gentle pry bar persuasion may be needed.

Step 7: Install New Hub Assembly 16. Slide the new hub assembly over the axle shaft — splines will align as you push it on. 17. Start all four 18mm bolts by hand before torquing any. 18. Torque the four hub mounting bolts in a cross pattern to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm). 19. Route the ABS sensor wire as it was and reconnect the connector.

Step 8: Reinstall Brake Components 20. Reinstall the rotor. 21. Reinstall the caliper bracket — torque to 65 ft-lbs. 22. Reinstall the caliper — torque pin bolts to 26 ft-lbs.

Step 9: Torque the Axle Nut 23. Thread on the new axle nut by hand. 24. Reinstall the wheel — lug nuts snug but not fully torqued. 25. Lower the car enough that the wheel contacts the ground. 26. Torque the new axle nut to 148 ft-lbs (200 Nm). 27. Fully lower the car. 28. Torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lbs (108 Nm) in a star pattern.

Traditional wheel bearing replacement requires pressing the old bearing out of the knuckle and pressing the new one in — a job requiring a hydraulic shop press ($1,500+). The 2019 Sportage AWD's bolt-on hub assembly eliminates this entirely. The entire bearing-and-hub is a single unit that bolts to the knuckle. No pressing required.
