Step-by-Step Instructions

  2. Let the exhaust cool — Exhaust temperatures on the 3.0L EcoBoost can exceed 1,000°F at the sensor location. Wait at least 2 hours after driving.
  3. Apply penetrating oil to the sensor bung — Spray PB Blaster or WD-40 Specialist Penetrant around the sensor threads where they thread into the exhaust bung. Let it soak 15–30 minutes. O2 sensors on high-mileage vehicles are often seized.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle — You'll need access under the vehicle for downstream sensors.
  5. Unplug the sensor connector — Trace the wire from the sensor location back to its connector. Press the tab and disconnect. On the 3.0L EcoBoost, connectors are typically clipped to brackets on the firewall or frame — unclip the wire guide clips to create enough slack.
  6. Remove the sensor — Use the oxygen sensor socket (slotted to accommodate the wire through the side). Turn counterclockwise. If the sensor won't budge, apply more penetrant and wait. A breaker bar may be needed for seized sensors.
  7. Inspect the threads — Once the sensor is out, look at the bung threads. If they're damaged or corroded, clean them with a thread chaser before installing the new sensor.
  8. Install the new sensor — Most O2 sensors come with anti-seize compound pre-applied to the threads (look for the gray coating). Thread in by hand first, then torque to 27–33 ft-lbs (37–45 Nm).
  9. Reconnect the electrical connector — Route the wire following the original routing, clip back into any bracket clips, and connect the connector until it clicks.

  • Not applying penetrant on seized sensors — Trying to remove a seized O2 sensor without penetrant risks snapping the sensor body off in the bung — a much worse problem.
