How to Check for Engine Oil Leaks (And Fix the Common Ones Yourself)

You notice a dark spot on your driveway. Or your oil level keeps dropping between changes even though nothing looks obviously wrong. Or you catch a faint burnt-oil smell every time the engine warms up. Any of these means you probably have an oil leak — and the sooner you find it, the less damage it does.

The good news: most common oil leaks are findable without a lift, and several are DIY-fixable in under an hour. Here's how to systematically check for leaks and identify what you're dealing with.

Step 1: Know What You're Looking For

Engine oil is dark brown to black (in used condition), slippery, and has a distinct burnt smell when it hits a hot exhaust component. Fresh oil is amber and clean. Either way, oil will leave a wet or greasy residue on whatever surface it's dripping onto.

Don't confuse oil with:

  • Coolant (antifreeze): Bright green, orange, pink, or blue — sweet smell
  • Transmission fluid: Reddish brown — often drips from underneath center of car
  • Power steering fluid: Amber or reddish — usually near the front of the engine
  • Water/condensation: Clear, watery, and evaporates quickly

Step 2: Do a Cold Engine Visual Inspection

With the engine cold and the car on level ground, pop the hood and look for wet, oily residue on or around these common leak points:

Valve cover gaskets: The top of the engine, along the edges of the valve covers. This is the most common oil leak on most engines. You'll see a dark, oily buildup along the seam where the valve cover meets the cylinder head.

Oil drain plug: Look at the bottom of the oil pan. A loose or stripped drain plug leaks from the lowest point of the engine.

Oil filter: Check around the base of the oil filter for seeping. If the filter wasn't fully tightened or the old O-ring wasn't removed, it will slowly weep oil.

Timing cover: On the front of the engine (behind the accessory belts), the timing cover seal can leak. Oil here tends to work its way down the front of the block.

Rear main seal: Where the crankshaft exits the back of the engine block. Leaks here drip onto the top of the bell housing or transmission. Harder to see; often found when doing a clutch or transmission job.

Oil pressure sensor/switch: Usually a threaded sensor with a wiring connector. Can weep or drip from the sealing threads.


Step 3: Run the Engine and Look Again

Start the engine and let it idle for 5–10 minutes. Oil pressure builds and the engine thermally expands — both make leaks more visible. With the engine idling:

  • Watch for fresh drips from below using a flashlight
  • Check the exhaust for blue smoke — burning oil from a leak hitting hot exhaust components
  • Smell for a burnt oil odor

Safety note: Keep your hands and loose clothing clear of moving belts and fans.


Step 4: Use UV Dye to Find Elusive Leaks

If you can't spot the source visually, UV leak detection dye is cheap and highly effective. Add a small amount to the engine oil, run the car for 20–30 minutes, then shine a UV light around the engine in a darkened garage. Leaks show up as glowing yellow-green streaks — even small ones are immediately obvious.

UV dye kits cost $10–$20 and usually include the dye and a UV flashlight.


Common Fixes You Can Do Yourself

Oil drain plug: If the plug itself is leaking, replace it and use a new crush washer (usually $2–$4). Torque to spec — most drain plugs are 20–30 ft-lbs.

Oil filter: Replace it. Make sure the old O-ring came off with the old filter before threading on the new one.

Oil pressure sensor: Unscrew the old one, apply thread sealant (not Teflon tape — use a liquid thread sealer), and torque the new one to spec.


When to Take It to a Shop

Rear main seal: This requires dropping the transmission. Not a beginner job.

Head gasket oil leak: If you find oil mixing with coolant (milky oil on the dipstick or under the oil cap), stop driving and get it diagnosed.

Front main/timing cover seal: Accessible, but requires removal of accessory belts and sometimes the harmonic balancer. Possible DIY with the right tools.
