How to Check and Top Off All Your Car's Fluids

A 10-minute fluid check once a month can prevent engine damage, brake failure, and overheating — problems that cost hundreds or thousands to fix. Here's a complete walkthrough of every fluid your car needs, how to check each one, and what to look for when something is off.

Before You Start

Park on level ground with the engine off and cool. Checking fluids on a hot engine gives inaccurate readings and risks burns. Transmission fluid is the one exception — it's typically checked with the engine warm and running.


1. Engine Oil

Where: Yellow or orange dipstick loop in the engine bay, near the oil fill cap.

How to check:

  1. Pull the dipstick and wipe it clean
  2. Reinsert fully, then pull again
  3. Oil level should be between MIN and MAX marks

What you're looking for:

  • Level: Between MIN and MAX, closer to MAX
  • Color: Amber to brown is normal. Black and gritty = overdue for a change. Milky/foamy = coolant contamination (head gasket issue — urgent).
  • Condition: Should be smooth on the stick, not chunky or sludgy

Top off with: The exact oil spec shown on the oil fill cap or in your owner's manual (e.g., 5W-30, 0W-20). Don't mix grades or brands unnecessarily.


2. Coolant (Engine Antifreeze)

Where: Plastic overflow reservoir near the radiator, usually labeled "COOLANT" or with a radiator symbol.

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine — pressurized coolant can spray and cause serious burns.

How to check: Read the side of the reservoir. The level should be between MIN and MAX when cold.

What you're looking for:

  • Level: Between MIN and MAX
  • Color: Bright green, orange, pink, or blue depending on type. Brown or rusty = contaminated, needs a flush.

Top off with: The same coolant type already in the system (not universal unless specified). Mix 50/50 with distilled water, or use a pre-mixed formula.


3. Brake Fluid

Where: Small reservoir near the firewall, on the driver's side, typically labeled "BRAKE FLUID." Usually has a plastic cap with a MIN/MAX line visible through the side.

How to check: Look at the side of the reservoir without removing the cap. Fluid level should be between MIN and MAX.

What you're looking for:

  • Level: Between MIN and MAX. Low brake fluid usually means the pads are worn (fluid drops as pistons extend) or there's a leak.
  • Color: Should be pale yellow or clear. Dark brown = old, contaminated — needs flushing.

Top off with: DOT 3 or DOT 4 as specified on the cap. Never use DOT 5 (silicone) in a system spec'd for DOT 3/4.

Warning: If the fluid is consistently low with no obvious cause, there may be a brake system leak. Have this inspected.


4. Transmission Fluid

Where: On vehicles with a dipstick (many modern automatics are sealed and don't have one — check your manual).

How to check (if dipstick present):

  • Engine warm and running, in Park
  • Pull dipstick, wipe, reinsert, pull again
  • Check level against HOT marks

What you're looking for:

  • Level: Between MIN and MAX on the HOT scale
  • Color: Bright red to pinkish = normal. Dark brown with a burnt smell = needs a change.

Top off with: The exact ATF spec for your vehicle — these are not interchangeable between manufacturers.


5. Power Steering Fluid (Hydraulic Systems Only)

Many newer vehicles have electric power steering and no fluid reservoir. If yours has hydraulic steering, the reservoir is a small container (usually labeled "POWER STEERING") on the side of the engine bay.

How to check: Some have a dipstick on the cap; others have MIN/MAX marks on the reservoir wall.

What you're looking for:

  • Level: At or near MAX when cold
  • Color: Light amber. Dark brown = oxidized, needs changing.

Signs of trouble: If it's consistently low, there's a leak in the hoses, pump, or rack.


6. Windshield Washer Fluid

Where: Blue cap reservoir in the engine bay, often labeled with a windshield symbol.

How to check: Visually — you can see the level through the translucent reservoir.

Top off with: Any windshield washer fluid. In freezing climates, use a freeze-rated formula. Never use plain water — it freezes in the lines and can grow bacteria in the system.

A monthly fluid check is a good habit. Add it to the first of every month — it takes 10 minutes and catches problems before they become expensive repairs.
