2021 BMW 3 Series 330i Oil Change (B58 Engine) — DIY Guide
BMW dealers charge $180–$250 to service the 330i; the DIY cost is around $70. The B58 engine in the 2021 3 Series is one of the best inline-six engines currently in production — smooth, reliable, and highly capable. It responds well to owner maintenance, but the oil specification is strict: BMW LL-04 or LL-17 FE+ rated 0W-30 or 0W-20 is required, not generic synthetic.

Oil note: The B58 requires BMW Longlife (LL) specification oil. BMW LL-04 spec oils include: Mobil 1 SAP 0W-30, Castrol TW EDGE LL BMW 0W-30, Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-30, and BMW Genuine Oil 0W-30 LL-04. Do not use oils certified only for API SP or ILSAC — they do not meet BMW's additive package requirements.
Drain plug note: The B58 uses a self-sealing plastic drain plug (BMW 11137524879). BMW recommends replacing this plug at every oil change — it has an integrated sealing ring that deforms once installed. The plug costs $2–$4. Do not reinstall a used plug.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the 330i for 5–7 minutes. Park on a level surface.
2. Raise and Support the Vehicle
Use a floor jack at the front subframe lift point and jack stands on the pinch weld adapter pads. Remove the front engine undertray — 8–10 T30 Torx bolts around the perimeter.
3. Access the Filter Housing from the Top
The BMW 11428683196 filter element is in a housing at the top-rear of the engine. Use the 36mm filter housing cap wrench to remove the cap counterclockwise. Pull the old filter element out.
4. Install the New Filter Element
Place the new filter element into the housing — it's directional and will only seat correctly. Replace the housing cap O-ring with the new one from the filter kit. Reinstall the cap and torque to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
5. Drain the Oil
Slide your 6-quart drain pan under the 17mm drain plug. Remove counterclockwise. The B58's 5.3-quart capacity drains in 8–10 minutes. Discard the old drain plug entirely.
6. Install the New Drain Plug
Thread in the new BMW 11137524879 self-sealing plug by hand. Torque to 18 lb-ft (25 Nm).
7. Add Oil
Remove the oil filler cap (large blue cap on the valve cover, driver's side). Add 5.0 quarts of LL-04 0W-30. Start the engine — oil pressure warning clears within 5 seconds.
Idle 90 seconds. Shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the oil level using the digital display: ignition ON → instrument cluster → Oil Level. Top up as needed. Final capacity with filter is 5.3 quarts.
8. Inspect for Leaks
Idle 2–3 minutes. Check drain plug and filter housing from below and above.
9. Reset the Condition Based Service (CBS)
Go to iDrive → Car → Settings → Service Required → Engine Oil. Press Reset.
B58 Oil Change Interval Notes
The B58 is a robust engine with low failure rates when maintained correctly. BMW's CBS system monitors engine temperature cycles, idle time, oil temp, and combustion events to estimate actual oil degradation. For most driving patterns, 7,500–10,000-mile intervals are realistic. Stop-and-go commuters should use a 7,500-mile hard cap regardless of CBS display.
