How to Change Your 2021 BMW X3 30i B46's Oil — DIY Guide

Here's what I do every time I service the 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30i — and once you've done it once, the B46 engine is one of the more accessible oil changes in the BMW lineup. BMW dealers charge $200–$280; DIY cost runs about $65–$85. The entire job is accessible from below — no top-engine access required. The critical details: this engine requires BMW LL-01 spec oil, and the filter housing cap requires a specific 36mm socket.

Oil note: The B46 requires BMW LL-01 specification. LL-01 is different from LL-04 (diesel/some newer gasoline models). Correct options: Castrol Edge Professional LongLife 0W-30 LL01, Liqui-Moly Molygen New Generation 0W-30 LL01, Pennzoil Platinum European 0W-30, and Mobil 1 New Life 0W-40. Do not use a generic 0W-40 or 5W-30 — BMW LL-01 requires a specific additive package.

Filter note: The 11428583898 filter is accessed from a housing below the engine on the B46 — unusual for European cars. The 36mm hex socket is BMW-specific and is a $12 socket available at any BMW parts supplier.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Run the X3 for 5–7 minutes. The B46's 5.3-qt capacity takes about 9 minutes to fully drain warm.

2. Access the Undertray

The 2021 X3 has a two-piece plastic undertray. Remove the front portion to access the filter housing and drain plug — held by T20 Torx bolts and plastic expanding clips.

3. Remove the Filter Housing Cap (Do This First)

On the B46, the filter housing is at the bottom-front of the engine block. Use the 36mm cup socket to break the cap loose counterclockwise. The cap unscrews and comes down with the filter element attached. Have your drain pan under it — residual oil will spill. Pull the old cartridge element off the cap. Wipe the housing interior clean.

4. Install the New Filter

Install the new O-rings on the housing cap (two O-rings are included with the 11428583898 kit). Press the new filter element onto the cap's center post. Reinstall the cap and torque to 18 lb-ft (25 Nm).

5. Drain the Oil

Move the drain pan to the 17mm drain plug. Break it loose and remove by hand. The B46's 5.3-qt drain takes 8–9 minutes. Remove the old drain plug with integral seal — the BMW 07119904492 is a one-piece drain plug with a bonded aluminum seal.

6. Install the New Drain Plug

Thread the new 07119904492 drain plug in by hand. Torque to 18 lb-ft (25 Nm).

7. Reinstall the Undertray

Reinstall the front undertray panel. All T20 Torx bolts and expanding clips should re-engage cleanly.

8. Add Oil

Remove the oil filler cap (yellow, toward the rear of the valve cover). Add 5.0 quarts of LL-01 0W-30. Start the engine — oil pressure indicator should clear within 5 seconds. Idle 90 seconds, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the digital oil level via iDrive: Vehicle → Status → Engine Oil Level. Top up to the MAX mark. Final capacity with filter is 5.3 quarts.

9. Check for Leaks

Idle 3 minutes. Inspect the filter housing cap and drain plug.

10. Reset the Condition Based Service (CBS)

Via iDrive: Car menu → Vehicle Status → Service Required → Engine Oil → Reset.

2021 BMW X3 30i B46 Ownership Notes

1. Timing chain: The B46 uses a wet timing chain on the front of the engine. Early B46 engines (2016–2018) had some tensioner issues. The 2021 B46B20 has updated components — but monitor cold-start rattles.
2. Oil level monitoring: BMW's oil level measurement is electronic on the 2021 X3. Always wait 5+ minutes after adding oil before checking.
3. Cap at 10,000 miles: The CBS can push intervals to 15,000 miles. I recommend capping at 10,000 miles for the turbo B46.
