How to Change Your 2021 Cadillac Escalade 6.2L V8 Oil — DIY Guide

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade's 6.2L L87 V8 is one of the best naturally aspirated V8 engines on the market — smooth, powerful, and long-lived with proper maintenance. Cadillac dealers charge $175–$225 for this service. DIY cost runs $55–$80. With an 8.0-qt capacity and a top-access cartridge filter, this is a straightforward job — just heavier on oil than most vehicles.

Additional tools: 15mm socket, 32mm filter housing cap socket, drain pan (10-qt minimum), funnel, torque wrench.

Oil note: The L87 V8 uses Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), which cycles individual cylinders continuously under light loads. dexos1 Gen 3 is mandatory — using non-spec oil can accelerate lifter wear in DFM-equipped engines.

Filter note: The PF63E is a cartridge element inside a retained plastic housing on top of the L87 engine. The 32mm housing cap stays on the engine. Have a drain tray and rags ready for cartridge removal.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Run the Escalade 7–8 minutes. The L87's 8.0-qt fill takes a full 12 minutes to drain completely when warm. Use a 10-qt drain pan.

2. Access the Filter Housing Cap (From Above)

Remove the engine cover (lifts straight off locating pins). The oil filter housing cap is on the driver's side toward the front. Have a drain tray positioned below the housing.

3. Remove the Filter Housing Cap

Using a 32mm socket, turn counterclockwise. Lift the cap slowly — the cartridge hangs from it, dripping oil. Allow it to drain 30 seconds. Twist off the old PF63E cartridge. Inspect the housing cap O-rings. Install the new PF63E cartridge onto the cap.

4. Raise the Vehicle

Use ramps or a floor jack with stands under the Escalade's frame jacking points. Use rated equipment for this large, heavy vehicle.

5. Drain the Oil

Locate the 15mm drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. Let the L87 drain 12 minutes — let it finish completely. Remove and discard the old 12337908 aluminum crush washer.

6. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread a new 12337908 aluminum crush washer onto the drain plug. Torque to 18 lb-ft (24 Nm). Use a torque wrench — this spec is lower than you'd expect for a V8 this size.

7. Reinstall the Filter Housing Cap

Lightly oil the new O-rings with fresh 0W-20. Torque the cap to 25 lb-ft (34 Nm).

8. Add Oil

Add 7.5 quarts of dexos1 Gen 3 0W-20 to start. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears in 3–4 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick. Add remaining oil in 0.25-qt increments until the dipstick reads full. Total capacity with filter is 8.0 quarts.

9. Check for Leaks

Inspect the filter housing and drain plug with the engine running.

10. Reinstall the Engine Cover

Align on locating pins and press down firmly until it snaps in.

11. Reset the Oil Life Monitor

On the 2021 Escalade: Navigate to Settings → Vehicle → Engine Oil Life → Reset in the infotainment display.

2021 Cadillac Escalade L87 Notes

  1. DFM and oil quality: The L87's Dynamic Fuel Management deactivates cylinders under light load. dexos1 Gen 3 isn't optional — it's the difference between an engine that lasts 250,000 miles and one that develops AFM lifter issues at 100,000.
  2. Large drain pan required: Most cheap drain pans are 4–6 quarts. The L87 needs a 10-qt pan minimum.
  3. Escalade oil change interval: For an Escalade that sees towing, cold starts, or city driving, service at 5,000–7,500 miles on dexos1 Gen 3 synthetic is a smart practice.
