How to Change Your 2022 Lincoln Navigator 3.5L Twin-Turbo Oil — DIY Guide
How to Change Your 2022 Lincoln Navigator 3.5L Twin-Turbo Oil — DIY Guide
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator runs the 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 — the same high-output platform shared with the Ford F-150 and Expedition, tuned for 440 hp. Dealers charge $160–$230 for this service. DIY cost is $45–$65. The EcoBoost's twin turbos make clean oil critical — carbon deposits from degraded oil can cause turbocharger issues well before the engine itself shows wear.

Oil note: The 2022 Navigator EcoBoost specifies 5W-30 synthetic meeting Ford WSS-M2C946-B1. Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-30, Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30, and Mobil 1 5W-30 are all compatible. Do not use conventional oil or 5W-20.
Filter note: The Motorcraft FL-500-S is a cartridge filter. The housing cap (verify 36mm on Navigator — confirm your fitment) stays on the engine; you swap only the cartridge.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the Navigator 7–8 minutes. If the turbo housings are hot from hard driving, let the vehicle idle 10 minutes to normalize turbo temperatures before shutting off.
2. Locate the Filter Housing Cap (From Above)
Open the hood. The 3.5L EcoBoost filter housing is mounted vertically in the engine compartment, accessible from above. Position drain tray or rags around the housing.
3. Remove the Filter Housing Cap
Use a 36mm socket (verify on your specific Navigator) to turn counterclockwise. Lift the cap with the cartridge and allow to drain. Remove the old FL-500-S cartridge. Inspect O-rings. Install the new FL-500-S cartridge on the cap.
4. Raise the Vehicle
Use ramps or a floor jack with stands under the frame jacking points. The Navigator is a large, heavy full-size SUV — use rated lifting equipment.
5. Drain the Oil
Locate the 15mm drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. Let it drain 8 minutes. Remove and discard the old EC-1183 crush washer.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Thread a new EC-1183 crush washer on the drain plug. Torque to 26 lb-ft (35 Nm). Do not exceed it on the aluminum oil pan threads.
7. Reinstall the Filter Housing Cap
Lightly coat the O-rings with fresh 5W-30. Torque the housing cap to 25 lb-ft (34 Nm) — the plastic housing cap cracks if overtightened.
8. Lower the Vehicle
Safely lower the Navigator.
9. Add Oil
Add 5.5 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears in 2–3 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick and add remaining oil in 0.25-qt increments to reach full. Total capacity with filter is 6.0 quarts.
10. Check for Leaks
Inspect the filter housing and drain plug.
11. Reset the Oil Life Monitor
On the 2022 Lincoln Navigator: Navigate to Settings in the SYNC infotainment display, then select Vehicle → Oil Life Reset and confirm.
2022 Lincoln Navigator EcoBoost Notes
- Turbo drain-back period: After shutting the engine off, give the turbos 5 minutes to cool before checking the oil level or performing service.
- 5W-30, not 5W-20 or 0W-20: The high-output EcoBoost in the Navigator requires 5W-30 full synthetic meeting WSS-M2C946-B1. Don't substitute lighter viscosities.
- 5,000-mile turbo interval: For a turbocharged V6 doing regular highway and towing duty, stick to 5,000-mile changes with quality 5W-30 synthetic.
