2021 Chevrolet Equinox Cabin Air Filter Replacement — 1.5T, Glove Box Access, 2-Min Swap

Which Engine You Have Doesn't Matter Here

The 2021 Equinox came with two turbocharged four-cylinder options:

• 1.5T LYX — the most common engine
• 1.5T LKW — higher output variant (some trims)

The cabin air filter location, access method, and filter part number are identical for both engines. Engine choice has no effect on this service.

Step-by-Step: 2021 Equinox Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Drop the Glove Box

1. Open the glove box fully.

2. On the right interior wall of the glove box (passenger side), locate the damper arm — a thin plastic rod that limits how far the glove box drops. Slide it out of its slot or unclip it. On the 2021 Equinox, this is a single push-clip connection — press and pull.

3. Squeeze both sides of the glove box inward with your hands (thumb on the outer edge, fingers on the inner side wall). You're compressing the glove box slightly so the side tabs clear the dashboard frame stops.

4. While squeezing, let the glove box drop down past its normal open position. It will pivot on its bottom hinge and hang down, giving you full access to the filter housing behind it.

   The whole "drop the glove box" step takes 10–15 seconds once you've done it once. The first time, go slowly — the plastic tabs are flexible but not indestructible.

Remove the Old Filter

5. The filter housing door is now visible directly behind the glove box — a flat rectangular door with a small tab or latch at one end.

6. Pull the latch tab toward you and swing the door open downward, or slide it out (varies slightly by production date). The filter is right there.

7. Pull the old filter straight out. It will have an airflow direction arrow — note which way it points before discarding the old filter. On the Equinox, the arrow typically points down or toward the firewall (into the cabin).

8. Dispose of the old filter. Do not shake it — you'll send allergens straight into the cabin air intake.

Install the New Filter

9. Slide the new filter into the housing with the airflow arrow in the same direction as the old filter.

10. The filter should slide in smoothly. If it catches, pull it back and check the orientation — a slightly angled insert will catch on the housing lip.

11. Close the filter housing door and snap or latch it shut.

Restore the Glove Box

12. Squeeze the glove box sides inward again, raise it up, and let the side tabs seat over the frame stops. The box will spring back to its normal fully-open position.

13. Reconnect the damper arm — press the clip end into its slot until it clicks.

14. Close the glove box fully and open it once more to confirm the latch works and the box sits flush.

Signs It's Time to Replace

• The glove box has been closed for months and you notice musty air from vents
• Reduced airflow at the same fan speed setting (clogged filter restricts HVAC flow)
• Visible contamination on the filter — dark gray/brown patches, visible debris in the pleats
• Allergy or pollen season — a fresh filter before spring makes a real difference
• Unknown service history on a used 2021 Equinox
