Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Drive the CX-9 for 5–7 minutes. The SKYACTIV-G turbo runs hot — after any spirited driving or extended highway use, idle for 90 seconds before shutting off to allow oil to continue circulating through the turbo bearing. Let the engine cool for 15–20 minutes before starting the service.

2. Locate the Drain Plug and Filter Housing

The 2021 CX-9 has a partial plastic underbody panel beneath the engine. Two or three push-pin retainers secure the front section. Pop them with a trim tool and fold the panel back to expose the oil pan.

The 14mm drain plug is on the driver's side rear of the oil pan. The Mazda SH01-14-302 filter housing is at the top of the engine on the passenger side — look for the large plastic hex cap near the intake manifold area. The top-mount design is one of the nicest things about SKYACTIV engine maintenance.

3. Drain the Oil

Set your drain pan under the drain plug. Break the 14mm plug loose, then unthread by hand. Let it drain fully. The SKYACTIV-G 2.5T holds 5.1 quarts and will take 8–10 minutes to drain completely.

While the oil drains, remove the aluminum Mazda 9956-41-400 crush washer from the drain plug and discard it. These are single-use; reusing a compressed washer leads to seeping leaks that worsen over multiple heat cycles.

4. Remove the Oil Filter Cartridge

Use your 64mm or 65mm cap socket to turn the filter housing cap counterclockwise. The cap will unthread and pull up with the filter cartridge attached.

Remove the O-ring from the cap groove. The new SH01-14-302 kit includes a replacement O-ring. Seat the new O-ring in the groove, ensuring it lies flat and isn't pinched or twisted. Press the new filter element into the cap until it seats.

Never reinstall the filter housing without replacing the O-ring.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread the drain plug in by hand with the new 9956-41-400 washer installed. Torque to 30 lb-ft (41 Nm).

6. Reinstall the Filter Housing Cap

Thread the filter housing cap clockwise and torque to 17–19 lb-ft (23–26 Nm). Use a torque wrench on the plastic filter housing — the internal threads can crack under impact tool use or hand-tight guesswork.

Replace the underbody panel and reseat the push-pin retainers.

7. Add Oil

Pour 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 through the filler cap. Start the engine. The oil pressure light should clear within 5 seconds. Let it idle 60–90 seconds, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick on the passenger side of the engine and top up to the upper mark. Full capacity is 5.1 quarts; you'll typically add about 0.4–0.6 quarts on the top-off step.

8. Start and Inspect

Run the engine at idle for 2–3 minutes. Check the drain plug area for drips. Check the top of the engine around the filter housing. Take the CX-9 for a 10-minute drive and do a final check on level ground once parked.

9. Reset the Mazda Maintenance Monitoring System

Turn the ignition to Run (engine off). Use the trip computer toggle on the steering wheel to navigate to the Oil Life display in the instrument cluster. Hold the trip reset button until the display resets to 100%.

On some 2021 CX-9 trims, the reset path is through the center display: Home → Settings → Vehicle Status Monitor → Oil Life → Reset.

SKYACTIV-G Turbo Notes

The CX-9 2.5T also uses a port- and direct-injection combined system, which helps reduce intake valve carbon buildup compared to direct-injection-only designs. Clean oil at the right spec and right interval is the biggest thing you can do for turbo longevity on this engine.
