2022 Honda Civic 1.5T Spark Plug Replacement — L15B7 Turbo, NGK Iridium, DIY Guide
The turbocharged 1.5L in the 2022 Honda Civic is a fundamentally different engine than the old naturally aspirated Civics. More performance, better efficiency — but also shorter plug replacement intervals than a typical iridium setup. Honda recommends replacing the plugs every 30,000 miles on the turbo Civic, not the 100,000-mile interval you see on non-turbo iridium applications. The combustion temps and carbon deposit behavior in a direct-injected turbocharged cylinder are harder on plugs.
I noticed rough cold starts and a slight fuel economy drop around 28,000 miles. New plugs fixed both. Here's the full procedure.

Pre-gapped plugs: The NGK ILFR6H-11 ships pre-gapped at the correct 1.1mm specification. Do not gap them. The iridium electrode tip is fragile — attempting to adjust the gap will chip or deform it, ruining the plug before it's installed.
OEM strongly recommended for the L15B7. The 1.5T is sensitive to plug type — running the wrong heat range causes fouling, misfires, or pre-ignition. Stick to NGK OEM or Honda-spec plugs.
Why 30,000 Miles on a Turbo?
Turbocharged direct-injection engines run higher combustion temperatures and produce more carbon deposits than port-injection NA engines. Those carbon deposits accelerate electrode wear and can cause misfires well before the 100,000-mile iridium plug life you'd see in a naturally aspirated application. Honda's 30,000-mile interval for the L15B7 is conservative but correct.
Symptoms of worn plugs on the 1.5T:
- Rough cold idle (especially in winter)
- Hesitation on light throttle from a stop
- Slight drop in fuel economy
- Occasional misfire code (P030X)
Tools Needed
- 5/8" spark plug socket (with rubber insert to grip plug)
- 3/8" drive ratchet and 6-inch extension
- Torque wrench (10–25 lb-ft range)
- Compressed air can or shop air (blow out plug wells before removal)
- Dielectric grease (apply to coil boot interior, not plug threads)
- Anti-seize: NOT recommended on iridium plugs — use only if you have concerns about an aluminum head; otherwise install dry
- Panel clips (not usually needed, but handy if engine cover clips are stiff)
Step-by-Step Plug Replacement
1. Let the Engine Cool
Hot aluminum head + steel spark plug threads = a recipe for seized plugs. Let the engine cool fully — at least 2 hours after last run, or overnight. Never remove spark plugs from a hot engine.
2. Remove the Engine Cover
The 2022 Civic 1.5T has a plastic engine cover sitting over the top of the engine. It's held by two or four friction clips — press down on both sides and lift straight up. No tools needed.
3. Locate the Ignition Coils
With the cover off, you'll see four ignition coil-on-plug assemblies sitting directly over the spark plug wells, one per cylinder. They're connected by individual wiring harness connectors.
4. Disconnect and Remove the Coil Packs
Starting with cylinder 1 (driver's side, front):
- Press the tab on the electrical connector and pull it off the coil
- Remove the single 10mm bolt holding the coil down
- Grip the coil body and pull straight up with a slight twist — it will release from the plug with a pop
Do one cylinder at a time. This avoids mixing up coil positions and keeps debris out of open plug wells.
5. Blow Out the Plug Wells
Before removing the plug, blast compressed air into the spark plug well. On the 1.5T, debris can sit in the well above the plug — you don't want it falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.
6. Remove the Old Spark Plug
Insert the 5/8" plug socket with extension straight down into the well. Turn counterclockwise to remove. The plug should back out smoothly. If it's stiff, break it loose with a short burst of force, then back out slowly.
Inspect the removed plug: the electrode tip shows wear if it's rounded instead of sharp. Normal combustion deposits are light tan or gray. Black sooty deposits = rich mixture or oil. White chalky = overheating.
7. Install the New Plug
Thread the NGK ILFR6H-11 in by hand first — at least 3 full turns before touching the socket. Cross-threading an aluminum head is expensive.
Torque to 13 lb-ft (18 Nm). That's not much — use a torque wrench. Overtightening stretches the plug threads and damages the aluminum head. Undertightening causes compression leaks and rattling.
8. Reinstall the Coil Pack
Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the coil boot (the rubber end that contacts the plug tip). This prevents the boot from bonding to the ceramic insulator and makes future removal easier.
Push the coil straight down onto the plug — you'll feel it seat fully. Reinstall the 10mm bolt and torque to 9 lb-ft (12 Nm). Reconnect the wiring harness connector until it clicks.
Repeat for all four cylinders.
9. Reinstall the Engine Cover and Start the Engine
Snap the engine cover back into its clips. Start the engine and listen for smooth idle — no misfires or rough running.
If you get a misfire after the change, you likely have a loose coil connector or a coil that didn't seat on the plug correctly. Recheck each coil.

At the 30,000-mile interval, that's a $120–$180 savings every 30k — or roughly three times over 90,000 miles.
Common Mistakes
1. Buying the wrong plug. The L15B7 uses a specific fine-wire iridium plug. The older Civic SI used a different plug. Verify with your VIN at a parts store or cross-reference your OEM part number.
2. Gapping the plugs. Pre-gapped iridium tips are not adjustable. Attempting to gap them ruins the plug.
3. Over-torquing. 13 lb-ft feels almost too light, but that's the correct spec for this aluminum head and plug diameter. Use a torque wrench.
4. Skipping the dielectric grease on the boot. Without it, the coil boot bonds to the ceramic after heat cycling. By the time you do the next plug change, you'll be fighting to remove the coil without tearing the boot.
5. Leaving compressed air out. Debris in the plug well is a real risk. Blow it out before removing the plug.
