2022 Honda Pilot 3.5L Spark Plug Replacement — J35Y6 V6, NGK ILZKBR7B8DG, Step-by-Step DIY Guide

Spark plug replacement on the 2022 Honda Pilot 3.5L is one of those jobs that sounds intimidating until you actually do it. The J35Y6 V6 has two banks of three cylinders — six plugs total, all individually accessible with a 3/8" drive extension and a spark plug socket. Dealers charge $300–$450 for this service. You can do it for $60 in parts and about 45 minutes of your time.

The Pilot's Honda-recommended interval is 100,000 miles for the OEM iridium plugs. Most mechanics I respect do it at 60,000 miles as preventive maintenance — iridium degrades gradually, and fresh plugs are cheap relative to the diagnosis and repair costs of a misfiring V6.

Iridium plug note: NGK ILZKBR7B8DG and Denso SKJ20DR-M11 are pre-gapped from the factory at the correct 0.044 inch gap. Do not bend the electrode or adjust the gap — iridium tips are fragile. Install as-is.

Step-by-Step Spark Plug Replacement

1. Gather Parts and Prep (5 minutes)

This job requires a cold engine — never remove spark plugs from a hot engine. Aluminum threads in a hot head gall easily. Let the Pilot sit for at least 2 hours after driving.

Remove the engine cover if equipped (snaps off on most Pilot builds).

2. Locate All Six Cylinders (5 minutes)

The J35Y6 V6 is a transversely mounted engine in the Pilot's engine bay.

  • Front bank (cylinders 1, 3, 5): Faces toward the radiator — easily accessible from above.
  • Rear bank (cylinders 2, 4, 6): Faces the firewall — requires more reach but is not inaccessible.

The front bank is straightforward. The rear bank is slightly more work but doesn't require any disassembly beyond the COP coils themselves.

3. Remove COP Coil — Front Bank (10 minutes)

For each cylinder on the front bank:

  1. Unplug the coil electrical connector — squeeze the tab and pull straight back.
  2. Remove the 7mm coil hold-down bolt.
  3. Twist the coil back and forth slightly to break the seal, then pull straight up.
  4. Set aside in order so each coil goes back to its original cylinder.

Before removing the plug: Use compressed air or a rag to blow any debris out of the spark plug well. You don't want grit falling into the combustion chamber.

4. Remove Front Bank Spark Plugs

Attach the 5/8" spark plug socket to your ratchet with a 6" extension. Insert into the plug well and thread counterclockwise. On the first plug, you'll feel significant resistance — it's normal. Turn counterclockwise steadily.

Remove each plug and inspect:

  • Normal wear: tan/light gray deposit, minimal electrode wear
  • White or chalky: possibly running lean or coolant intrusion
  • Black sooty: running rich
  • Oil-fouled: check valve seals

5. Remove COP Coil and Plugs — Rear Bank (15 minutes)

The rear bank (cylinders 2, 4, 6) faces the firewall. You'll need a 10" extension plus the 6" extension combined to reach the plugs comfortably. Some mechanics remove the intake manifold cover or the throttle body air boot to improve reach — on the Pilot it's usually not necessary, just awkward.

Work by feel for the rear bank plugs. The spark plug socket's rubber insert holds the plug as you withdraw it — that grip is essential here since you can't see what you're doing directly.

6. Inspect and Set Aside Old Plugs

Line up all six old plugs in cylinder order. Check the gap on each with a feeler gauge — if the gap has grown past 0.055 inch, that plug was definitely contributing to reduced combustion efficiency. Compare tips for signs of oil fouling or excessive wear.

7. Install New Spark Plugs

Thread each NGK ILZKBR7B8DG in by hand for the first 3 turns — never use the ratchet to start threads. Cross-threading spark plugs in an aluminum head is an expensive mistake.

Hand-tight, then torque to 13 lb-ft. On the rear bank, use a torque wrench with the long extension — feel for the final resistance. If you can't get the torque wrench on the rear bank, snug hand-tight plus 1/8 turn is a reliable backup.

8. Reinstall COP Coils

Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of each coil boot — this prevents the boot from fusing to the ceramic insulator and makes future replacements easier. Don't apply grease to the electrode end.

Reinstall each coil in its original cylinder position. Thread the 7mm hold-down bolt by hand, then torque to 8.7 lb-ft. Reconnect the electrical connector — you'll hear a click.

9. Start and Verify

Start the Pilot. Let it idle for 60 seconds. The engine should idle smoothly — no rough idle, no misfire. If you get a Check Engine light for a misfire (P030X codes), one of the COP connectors isn't fully seated. Shut off and recheck.

10. Clear Any Codes (if applicable)

If you accidentally triggered a misfire code during the swap, clear it with an OBD-II scanner. Most code readers in the $30–$50 range can clear codes on the Pilot.

Common Mistakes

1. Adjusting the gap on iridium plugs. NGK ILZKBR7B8DG is pre-gapped. The fine iridium electrode breaks if you try to set the gap. Install as-is.

2. Hot engine removal. Always let the engine cool for at least 2 hours. Aluminum head threads gall when hot.

3. Cross-threading. Always hand-start plugs for the first 3 turns. The rear bank is especially prone to this because you're working by feel.

4. Skipping the dielectric grease. Without grease on the coil boot, the boot can fuse to the ceramic after 60,000 miles of heat cycling. Future plug service will tear the boot.

5. Forgetting to clear debris from plug wells first. Blow out each well with compressed air before removing the plug. Even a small piece of grit in the combustion chamber can cause damage.

When doing spark plugs, also check: serpentine belt condition, valve clearance (Honda specifies valve adjustment at 105,000 miles on the J35Y6), and the PCV valve. It's also a good time to inspect the ignition coils — if one is swollen or cracked, replace it.
