Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine (4 minutes)

Run the Santa Fe for 4–5 minutes, then shut off and wait 5 minutes. The Smartstream G2.5T turbocharger uses oil-fed bearings — a warm drain ensures the oil exits fully from the turbo oil feed circuit. Never drain cold on a turbocharged engine.

2. Access the Underside

Lift the front of the Santa Fe on ramps or jack stands. The front subframe is the correct lift point. Remove the plastic engine undertray if equipped — typically four 10mm bolts and two push-pin clips.

3. Drain the Oil

The drain plug is at the rear of the oil pan, slightly offset toward the driver's side. Position your 7-quart drain pan under it. Remove the 17mm drain plug counterclockwise.

Let it drain 8–10 minutes. Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine to break the vacuum and speed drainage.

4. Remove the Oil Filter

The Hyundai 26300-35504 is a spin-on filter located on the passenger side of the engine block. Access from below. Remove counterclockwise with a filter wrench if needed.

Check the filter mounting surface — confirm the old rubber O-ring came off with the filter.

5. Install the New Filter

Apply a thin coat of fresh 5W-30 to the O-ring on the new filter. Thread on hand-tight, then add ¾ of a turn. No filter wrench for tightening.

6. Reinstall the Drain Plug with Fresh Washer

Install a new Hyundai 21513-23001 washer on the drain plug. Thread in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to 25–32 lb-ft. I target 29 lb-ft as the midpoint. The aluminum oil pan on the G2.5T is sensitive to over-torque.

7. Fill with 5W-30

Add 5.5 quarts first through the oil filler cap. Replace the cap, start the engine, idle 60 seconds. Shut off, wait 2 minutes, check the dipstick. Total capacity with filter: 5.9 quarts. Add the remaining oil incrementally until the dipstick reads FULL.

Post-startup turbo check: After filling, let the engine idle for 2 minutes before driving. This gives oil time to fully pressurize through the turbocharger oil feed line.

8. Check for Leaks

At idle, inspect the drain plug and oil filter from below with a flashlight. No seepage = you're done. Shut off, wait 5 minutes, final dipstick check.

9. Reset the Oil Life Monitor

On the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe:

1. Turn ignition ON, engine off
2. Navigate to the Instrument Cluster Menu using the steering wheel OK button
3. Scroll to Service Interval > Engine Oil
