I bought a 2022 Tucson Hybrid partly because of the fuel economy, but I was worried the hybrid powertrain would make routine maintenance more complicated. The oil change is actually straightforward — it's a conventional drain-and-fill just like any other car. The hybrid system doesn't change the procedure at all. What does change is the oil spec and the interval.

Here's the complete oil change procedure for the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid.

Engine and Powertrain Overview

The 2022 Tucson Hybrid uses the 1.6L G4FT turbocharged GDi engine paired with a 44.2 kW electric motor and 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The combustion engine handles oil changes the same as any other direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder. The electric motor and hybrid battery are sealed systems requiring no routine maintenance.

Why 0W-20 on a turbo? The G4FT is designed around a lower-viscosity oil to improve fuel efficiency and hybrid system coordination. Using a heavier oil (5W-30 or 5W-40) won't immediately damage the engine but will reduce fuel economy and doesn't match Hyundai's published spec.

7,500-mile interval: The hybrid system reduces cold starts and short-trip stress on the oil by running on electric power more often. The G4FT's oil doesn't degrade as fast under these conditions. 7,500 miles is the appropriate interval with full synthetic — shorter isn't necessary.

Tools and Parts List

  • 5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic (buy 5; the engine takes 4.4 with filter)
  • Hyundai/Kia 26300-3C100 oil filter or equivalent
  • 17mm socket or box wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • 5–6 quart drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Rags / shop towels
  • Drain plug crush washer: Hyundai 21513-23001 (replace at every other change minimum)

Hybrid note: You do not need to turn off the high-voltage battery or do anything special to work on the 1.6T engine. The drain plug, oil filter, and fill port are all standard combustion-engine locations on the front of the engine bay. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables under the hood — they're sealed and not near the oil service area.

Safety — Hybrid Awareness

For oil changes on the Tucson Hybrid, you are only working on the combustion engine. The high-voltage components are located separately. That said:

  • Always set the vehicle to OFF (not READY mode) before working underneath it
  • Confirm the Ready indicator light on the instrument cluster is off before getting under the vehicle
  • Apply the parking brake and use wheel chocks

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Start the Tucson in Normal drive mode (not EV mode) and drive for 3–5 minutes or idle for 4–5 minutes to bring the oil up to working temperature. Warm oil drains cleanly and quickly. Shut the vehicle off completely — ensure the green READY light is off.

2. Access the Engine Underside

The 2022 Tucson Hybrid has a plastic splash shield under the engine. It's held by 10mm bolts and push-pin clips — the number varies by trim level. Remove the shield and set it aside to expose the drain plug and oil filter.

3. Drain the Oil

Position your drain pan under the oil pan drain plug — it's on the underside of the engine, toward the rear of the oil pan. The 17mm drain plug faces downward.

Break it loose counterclockwise with your 17mm socket, then unthread by hand. When it's almost out, pull the plug away quickly so oil doesn't run down your arm. The G4FT holds 4.4 quarts — let it drain 8–10 minutes.

Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine (twist and lift) to let air in and speed the drain.

4. Replace the Oil Filter

The 26300-3C100 is a canister-style spin-on filter on the front passenger side of the engine. Reach from above or below depending on your access.

Unscrew counterclockwise. The filter holds about 1/3 quart of oil — have your drain pan underneath or a rag ready.

Clean the mounting surface with a lint-free rag. Verify the old rubber O-ring came off with the filter.

Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 to the new filter's O-ring. Screw on hand-tight, then add ¾ of a turn. Do not use a filter wrench to tighten.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Replace the crush washer if you have a new one. Torque to 26 lb-ft (35 Nm).

6. Fill with 0W-20

Add 4.0 quarts first through the oil filler neck. Reinstall the filler cap. Start the engine (the Tucson may start in EV mode — that's normal; the combustion engine will start when needed). Let it idle 60 seconds, then shut off. Wait 2 minutes and check the dipstick.

Add the remaining 0.4 quart to reach the FULL mark. The G4FT dipstick reads accurately when the vehicle is on level ground and the engine has been off for at least 2 minutes.

7. Inspect for Leaks

Run the engine for 2 minutes. From below (or with the drain pan still in position), inspect the drain plug area and filter for seeping oil. Any drip = recheck plug torque and filter seating before driving.

8. Reinstall the Splash Shield

Reinstall the plastic undershield with its bolts and push pins. Don't skip it — it protects the oil pan and filter from road debris.

9. Reset the Oil Life Indicator

On the 2022 Tucson Hybrid:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (not READY / not started)
  2. Press the menu button on the cluster and navigate to Vehicle > Oil Life
  3. Hold the OK button until the oil life resets to 100%

Or through the touchscreen: Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset > Confirm.

The 7,500-mile interval means roughly two changes per year for most drivers — so that's $120–$170 in savings per year, every year.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 5W-30 because it's labeled "good for turbos." The G4FT is specced for 0W-20. Thicker oil on this engine reduces fuel economy measurably and doesn't improve protection.

2. Leaving the vehicle in READY mode. Always confirm the green READY light is fully off before getting underneath. In READY mode, the engine can start automatically.

3. Not checking if the old filter O-ring transferred. Same issue as other Hyundai/Kia engines — the O-ring occasionally sticks to the engine block. Two O-rings on the mating surface = immediate leak.

4. Overtightening the drain plug. 26 lb-ft. The aluminum oil pan on the G4FT is not repairable if the threads strip.

5. Using 4.0 quarts flat and calling it done. The capacity with a filter change is 4.4 quarts. Check the dipstick.

Hybrid-Specific Notes

  • Oil in the G4FT tends to stay cleaner than in a conventional vehicle because the engine doesn't run during all low-speed operation. Don't let this tempt you to extend the interval beyond 7,500 miles — direct injection and turbocharging still stress the oil at operating temperature.
  • If you notice the engine running rougher or oil consumption higher than expected, check your PCV system. The G4FT is susceptible to oil misting under certain hybrid load conditions.
