How to Change Your 2022 Lexus RX 350's Oil — DIY Guide

Here's what I do every time I service the 2022 Lexus RX 350 — and it's a classic Toyota-family oil change. The 2GR-FKS V6 is one of the most refined naturally aspirated engines in the segment, and it has a very clean oil change routine. Lexus dealers charge $150–$200; DIY cost runs $45–$65. The main detail: the 2022 RX 350 uses an upright spin-on filter that's accessible from above without ramps, though draining the oil still requires getting under the vehicle.

Additional tools: 14mm socket, filter wrench (Toyota 64.5mm cup or strap wrench), drain pan, funnel, torque wrench.

Oil note: Toyota-spec 0W-20 meets or exceeds API SP and ILSAC GF-6A. Toyota Genuine 0W-20, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20, Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20, and Idemitsu 0W-20 all meet spec.

Filter note: The 90915-10003 spin-on filter stands upright on the driver's side of the 2GR-FKS engine. This upright orientation is unusual — on most engines the filter hangs at an angle. On the RX 350, it's easy to access from above.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Run the RX 350 for 5–7 minutes. The 2GR-FKS V6's 6.4-qt capacity takes about 10 minutes to fully drain warm.

2. Remove the Filter (From Above)

Open the hood. The spin-on filter stands upright on the driver's side of the engine block, toward the front. Use a Toyota filter wrench to loosen counterclockwise. Unscrew fully and remove. Let any residual oil drip into a rag.

3. Raise the Vehicle

Use ramps or a floor jack with stands to access the drain plug underneath.

4. Drain the Oil

Locate the 14mm drain plug on the bottom rear of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. The 2GR-FKS 6.4-qt fill takes a full 10 minutes to drain. Remove the old copper 90430-12031 drain plug gasket.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread a new 90430-12031 copper gasket on the drain plug. Thread in by hand. Torque to 33 lb-ft (44 Nm). Higher than most 4-cylinders — correct for the steel oil pan.

6. Install the New Filter

Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 oil to the rubber gasket of the new 90915-10003 filter. Thread in by hand until the gasket contacts the engine. Tighten an additional 3/4 turn — do not use a wrench to tighten.

7. Add Oil

Remove the oil filler cap (yellow, rear of the valve cover). Add 6.0 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears within 3 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick and add remaining ~0.4 qt if needed. Final capacity with filter is 6.4 quarts.

8. Check for Leaks

With the engine idling, check under the vehicle at the drain plug and check the filter from above. The upright filter makes it easy to see any drips.

9. Reset the Maintenance Light

On the 2022 Lexus RX 350: press and hold the odometer reset button (or OK button on push-button start trims), turn ignition to ON, continue holding until the MAINT REQD light flashes and resets.

2022 Lexus RX 350 2GR-FKS Notes

  1. D-4ST dual injection: The 2GR-FKS uses both direct injection and port injection simultaneously — a Toyota-exclusive feature that addresses carbon buildup on intake valves. Walnut blasting is typically not needed.
  2. Higher drain plug torque: At 33 lb-ft, the RX 350 drain plug is torqued higher than most similar-displacement engines. Use the torque wrench.
  3. Timing belt: The 2GR-FKS is belt-driven, not chain — replace at 90,000 miles. This is the main scheduled maintenance item beyond fluid changes.
