How to Change Your 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 Oil — DIY Guide
How to Change Your 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 Oil — DIY Guide
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner's 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 is a legendary engine — bulletproof, over-built, and surprisingly easy to service yourself. Toyota dealers typically charge $120–$160 for this oil change; DIY cost runs $35–$55. The 1GR-FE has been in production since 2002 with minimal changes, which means the parts are inexpensive and the procedure is very well documented.

| Item | OEM / Spec | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Oil filter | Toyota 90915-YZZD2 | Spin-on cartridge; standard Toyota hex cap |
| Drain plug gasket | Toyota 90430-12031 | Copper sealing ring; replace each service |
| Motor oil | 5W-30 full synthetic | Toyota spec for 1GR-FE; API SN/SP |
| Capacity | 5.5 qt (5.2 L) with filter | 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 |
| Drain plug torque | 27 lb-ft (37 Nm) | 14mm hex |
Additional tools: 14mm socket (drain plug), 64.5mm filter wrench (or strap wrench), drain pan, funnel, torque wrench.
Oil note: The 1GR-FE specifies 5W-30 — different from many newer Toyota engines that run 0W-20. Do not substitute 0W-20 unless specifically cleared in your owner's manual. Toyota Genuine 5W-30, Mobil 1 5W-30, Valvoline Advanced 5W-30 Full Synthetic all meet spec.
Filter note: The 90915-YZZD2 is on the passenger side of the engine block, accessible from below. Easier with a short lift or ramps.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the 4Runner 5–7 minutes. The 1GR-FE's 5.5-qt capacity drains well in 8–10 minutes when warm. Park on a level surface.
2. Raise the Vehicle
The 4Runner's ground clearance is generous. Use ramps or a floor jack with stands. You need access to the passenger-side engine block for the filter and the bottom of the engine for the drain plug.
3. Remove the Oil Filter
Locate the 90915-YZZD2 filter on the passenger side of the engine block. Use a strap wrench or 64.5mm filter cup to loosen counterclockwise. Have a rag ready. Unscrew fully and set aside.
4. Drain the Oil
Move to the 14mm drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. Let it drain 8–10 minutes. Remove and discard the old Toyota 90430-12031 copper gasket.
5. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Thread a fresh 90430-12031 copper gasket onto the drain plug. Torque to 27 lb-ft (37 Nm). The 4Runner sees rough terrain — don't shortcut this spec.
6. Install the New Filter
Apply a light film of fresh 5W-30 to the rubber gasket of the new 90915-YZZD2 filter. Thread in by hand until the gasket contacts the block. Tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
7. Add Oil
Remove the oil filler cap. Add 5.0 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears within 2–3 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick. Add the remaining ~0.5 qt to reach the full mark. Final capacity with filter is 5.5 quarts.
8. Check for Leaks
With the engine running, check the filter from below and the drain plug.
9. Lower the Vehicle
Safely lower the 4Runner.
10. Reset the Maintenance Reminder
On the 2022 4Runner: Navigate to the vehicle settings through the multi-information display using the steering wheel controls. Select MAINT REQD RESET and confirm.
2022 Toyota 4Runner 1GR-FE Notes
- 5W-30, not 0W-20: The 1GR-FE predates Toyota's broader move to 0W-20. Don't use 0W-20 thinking it's an upgrade.
- Legendary longevity: With consistent 5W-30 changes, the 1GR-FE is routinely reported past 300,000 miles. Service every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
- Copper drain plug gasket: Always replace the 90430-12031 copper gasket — it's a one-time crush seal.
