How to Change Your 2023 Chevrolet Malibu 1.5T Oil — DIY Guide

The 2023 Chevrolet Malibu with the 1.5T LFV turbocharged four-cylinder is one of the most straightforward oil changes you'll do. The LFV engine is compact, the cartridge filter is top-access, and the whole job runs under 45 minutes if you've done it once. Dealers and shops charge $80–$110 for this service. DIY cost is $25–$38. Oil note: The LFV 1.5T requires dexos1 Gen 3 full synthetic 0W-20. GM Genuine or ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3 0W-20 is the OE fill; Mobil 1 dexos1 Gen 3 and Pennzoil Platinum dexos1 Gen 3 meet spec. Do not use conventional 5W-30 — the LFV turbocharged engine needs the low-viscosity synthetic.

Filter note: The PF2257G is a cartridge-style filter inside a reusable plastic housing. The housing cap is on top of the engine and takes a 27mm socket. When you replace, you're swapping just the cartridge — not the whole housing.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Run the Malibu 5 minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil drains faster and carries more suspended particles out with it. The LFV's 4.2-qt capacity drains in about 7–8 minutes when warm. Park on a level surface.

2. Locate the Filter Housing Cap (From Above)

Open the hood. The LFV engine has the oil filter housing on the driver's side upper section of the engine. The plastic cap is large — 27mm hex. Have a drain pan or rag underneath because some oil will drip when you remove the cartridge.

3. Remove the Filter Housing Cap

Use a 27mm socket and turn counterclockwise. Lift the housing cap slowly — the cartridge hangs attached to the cap. Let it drain a moment before pulling it fully out. Twist off the old cartridge. Install the new PF2257G cartridge onto the cap, making sure the O-rings seat correctly.

4. Raise the Vehicle

Use ramps or a floor jack with stands to access the underside. The Malibu has a partial undertray — it may have a small access panel or you may need to remove a single fastener for drain plug clearance.

5. Drain the Oil

Locate the 15mm drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. Position your drain pan and remove the plug counterclockwise. Let the engine drain 7–8 minutes. Remove and discard the old aluminum crush washer (12337908).

6. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Install a new 12337908 aluminum crush washer on the drain plug. Thread the plug in by hand until seated, then torque to 18 lb-ft (24 Nm). Do not overtighten — the LFV oil pan threads are relatively shallow.

7. Reinstall the Filter Housing Cap

Lightly coat the cap O-rings with fresh 0W-20. Thread the housing cap in by hand until seated, then torque to 25 lb-ft (34 Nm).

8. Add Oil

Remove the yellow oil filler cap. Add 4.0 quarts of dexos1 Gen 3 0W-20. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears in about 2 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick. Add the remaining ~0.2 qt to reach the full mark. Final capacity with filter is 4.2 quarts.

9. Check for Leaks

With the engine idling, look under the hood at the filter housing cap and under the vehicle at the drain plug.

10. Reset the Oil Life Monitor

On the 2023 Malibu: press and hold the menu button on the instrument cluster until OIL LIFE appears. Hold SET/CLR until the percentage resets to 100%.

1. Turbo heat matters: The LFV is turbocharged — oil quality degrades faster under hard driving. Stick to 5,000–7,500-mile intervals or follow the GM Oil Life Monitor.
